It’s not too late to save public education in California! With Eli Broad and his fellow billionaires poised to privatize education in Los Angeles, it is time to say NO! Join the campaign to repeal the charter law in California.
Join Voices Against Privatizing Public Education’s efforts to repeal the California charter school law
There is a small grass-roots group that has been working diligently to create a ballot proposition to repeal the charter school laws. While a seemingly daunting task, there might not ever be another chance to do this before the privatizers eliminate public schools altogether (Eli Broad just announced his plans to cut LAUSD’s public schools in half). The group has an online petition that now has over 600 signatures. They also have a facebook group. (Open the link.)

Most importantly, they have picked up a handful of key labor leaders and organizations:
AFT Local 6161 (Palomar Faculty Federation)
North County Labor Alliance
Escondido Public School Advocates
Bill Freeman- NEA Board member for California
Alita Blanc- United Educators of San Francisco
The coalition is working hard to get several more organizations on board, including local Democratic party clubs in several large cities. Please consider getting involved, and perhaps even endorsing the efforts of the group.
I’ve joined. Now we have to convince our own teacher’s unions to join.
Thanks Paula…now let’s see the LAUSD BoE members all join.
8/17Press Conference/Speak Out At Broad Foundation
Stop Destroying Public Education-Repeal California School Charter Laws
Get The Crooks Out Of Public Education
Broad Foundation
2121 Avenue of The Stars, Los Angeles
Monday August 17, 2015 12:00 noon
The Broad Foundation has just announced that it wants to double the number of public funded privately run charters in Los Angeles. This foundation has played a central role in pushing charters and privatization in the US and it has trained people like former LAUSD Superintendent Deasy who have been involved in systemic corruption. This “foundation” has placed not only management in public schools throughout the country but also has placed pro-charter and privatization supporters on public boards and agencies throughout the country. There is a sordid record of financial conflicts of interests and the concerted effort by Broad, Gates Foundation, Bechtel Foundation, Walton/Walmart, KIPP GAP, Pearson Inc, and a myriad of other profiteers to transform our public education system into a profit making scam operation that not only steals from the public but ends up re-segregating education in Los Angeles and the United States.
This press conference speak out will have teachers and supporters of public education speak out about specific violation of the education code, systemic corruption and the need not only to support the repeal of charters in California but for investigation and prosecution of the criminals involved in the massive privatization scam now going on in California and nationally.

We repealed the Emergency Mangler law in Michigan and the TEAGOP legislature just turned around a repassed the same law under a new number with a phony appropriation rider attached so it was immune to referendum. So watch out for that …
For all their ballyhoo about “choice” these bullionaires care nothing for the Will of the People. Voters can reject charters and vouchers till they are blue in the ballot box and it does nothing but make the Broad, DeVos, Gates, Waltons sneakier on the next attack. Like all commercial interests all they care about is chaining the public’s choice to what it profits them the max to sell.
I just signed the petition. Thank you for the link. Does anyone have ideas for how to inform colleagues in L.A. about this without being targeted like Rafe Esquith by the many Deasy appointed LAUSD administrators? We are officially prohibited from many forms of communication by the district, and unofficially persecuted if caught using other means.
Get people who are retired teachers (such as myself), parents, etc. to help inform people. I also work with a group called TEAch – Transparency, Equity and Accountability in Charters. So many issues, multiple fronts to fight them. And I do think teachers should find allies outside who can help.
Also work with Joining Forces for Education…an organization of mainly retired educators which focuses on informing the public, and active teachers, of the issues surrounding privatization. We have a dedicated group of letter writers, and also a Speaker’s Bureau.

10-4! Very good idea.
Thank you! I’ll be in touch.
I meant thanks to both responders. Sorry for the redundant posting.
The Wages of Rebellion (Chris Hedges). Most read it but can’t wrap their brains around changing their lives and doing whatever it takes to change a corrupt system of governance. As LAUSD goes, so goes other metropolitan unified school districts. As a former teacher on the California Coast, I feel your pain. When the persecution came because of my views I sued the district and site individually and severally. I won. We can win. I’d rather shovel shit than be captured in a ghetto of fear and delusion thinking that petitioning from within does shit.
See if there is a parent at your school who will take on this activist role.
I tried to sign but it looks like I need to be a California resident?
Voices Against Privatizing Public Education will be doing a press conference in front of the Broad Foundation this week in Los Angeles. When I get details I will post on K12NN, the site that Professor Ravitch linked to at the top of this page.
Here is all the info, Robert. Came from Roberta this AM.
