Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post ran an editorial pointing out the irony of Obama selecting the director of the Walmart Foundation to run OMB, the agency that makes decisions about the nation’s spending.
During his 2008 campaign, Obama criticized a hillary Clinton for sitting on the board of Walmart, and he blasted the corporation’s hostility to labor unions and the environment. Norm he praises Walmart for saving consumers’ money.
The Post sees this as a sign that it is time to allow Walmart to open a store in New York City, which will be a death knell for thousands of small businesses.
More efficient competitors have long caused harm to small firms. Here is a quote from a French petition concerning unfair competition in the candle market from 1850:
“We are subjected to the intolerable competition of a foreign rival, who enjoys, it would seem, such superior facilities for the production of light, that he is enabled to inundate our national market at so exceedingly reduced a price, that, the moment he makes his appearance, he draws off all custom from us; and thus an important branch of French industry, with all its innumerable ramifications, is suddenly reduced to a state of complete stagnation.”
Frédéric Bastiat
New Yorkers are far too cool to shop at Wal-mart.
Does this tell us who the POTUS really is?
I guess he is just setting up his clients for speeches after he leaves office. I heard Bill Clinton makes a killing with speaking engagements and that Hillary will be following his lead. I hoped for so much from this man; he is an utter disappointment.
He’s a clueless sell-out. Maybe Walmart will let his drones take-off, land, and refuel on thier rooftops.
From page 203 of _Death and Life of the Great American School System_:
“Is there any commonality between the Walmart business philosophy and the Walton funding of school choice? When Walmart comes into a small town, the locally owned stores on Main Street often close down, because they can’t match Walmart’s low prices. In education, the Waltons underwrite charter schools and voucher programs that compete with the government-run public school system. Some left-wing critics think the Waltons are pushing privatization so they can make money in the education industry, but that does not seem credible. It simply doesn’t make sense that a family worth billions is looking for new ways to make money. But why should it be surprising that a foundation owned by one of the richest families in the United States opposes government regulation and favors private sector solutions to social problems? Why should it be surprising that a global corporation that has thrived without a unionized workforce would oppose public sector unions? Nor should it be surprising that the Walton Family Foundation has an ideological commitment to the principle of consumer choice and to an unfettered market, which by its nature has no loyalties and disregards Main Street, traditional values, long-established communities, and neighborhood schools.”
Let me get this straight. The Walton Founation is in bed w/Broad & Gates – the billionaire triumvirate funding and driving the privatization of public education. Now Obama (who is at the government helm driving the same thing), appoints someone with this billionaire club to lead the federal agency on budget & management? They need a bigger bed.
