From a teacher:
As these horrific events were unfolding, I spent the day teaching kindergarten and first grade music classes. We sang, we played games, we laughed together. The horror of this tragedy is that it could have happened anywhere in America. Our schools connect us, they nurture our children, they define our communities. So proud of the heroic actions of our teaching brothers and sisters in Newtown.

We are proud of those heroic teachers. I just wish we could change things politically, so teachers and children wouldn’t have to be so brave. It isn’t fair of society to expect citizens to face gunfire — especially our youngest citizens. Gun control and mental health services would be an enormous start. As a society, we need to take responsibility.

I, too, spent the day teaching music classes to young children unaware of what had happened in Newtown. I shudder to think now that at the precise moment in time that the shooter entered the Sandy Hook School, my school was having a fire drill–all students and staff members were outside and exposed. Words cannot express how close to home all of this is. May the families of all the victims find comfort.

Not to fear, there will soon be block grants available to place armed guards in every school” to prevent this problem from happening again.”The politicians will use this as a means to make more money for their “buddies.” The grubby hands are already outstretched.
