The Bulwark is a Never-Trumper site, made up of angry Republicans. They have terrific content. Here is Bill Kristol, former editor of the conservative Weekly Standard, praising Kamala’s fabulous speech.
Success.
Kamala Harris’s acceptance speech last night was a success. It capped a Democratic convention that was a success. That convention, in turn, capped Harris’s first month as a candidate, which was a success.
All that success was by no means inevitable.
One really has to tip one’s hat to the vice president and her campaign, and say: Not bad. Not bad at all. Pretty damn impressive, in fact.
Of course past performance is no guarantee of future results. Still, it does seem that a certain amount of optimism—guarded and hard-headed optimism—is warranted. We now have a reasonable likelihood of defeating Donald Trump, and electing as our next president a vigorous and centrist leader of a healthy and mainstream political party.
The convention has sought, for the most part, to present such a party. And last night’s speech presented such a leader.
The speech began with a very effective biographical section. Harris’s mother, Shyamala Harris, was central to her narrative. The tribute to her mother ran like a red thread through this part of the speech, and indeed the speech as a whole, allowing Harris to humanize herself while deftly avoiding the grandiosity and pomposity that often mar such efforts.
Having introduced herself to the nation, Harris formally accepted the nomination of her party. But it was a remarkably nonpartisan acceptance of a party’s nomination:
And, so, on behalf of the people, on behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender or the language your grandmother speaks. On behalf of my mother, and everyone who has ever set out on their own unlikely journey. On behalf of Americans like the people I grew up with—people who work hard, chase their dreams and look out for one another. On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth, I accept your nomination to be president of the United States of America.
The tone of that paragraph laid the groundwork for the rest of the speech. Harris spoke more as an American than as a Democrat; as a patriot, not a partisan; and as someone grateful not aggrieved, future-oriented but not at all hostile to our past.
And so Harris continued:
And let me say, I know there are people of various political views watching tonight. And I want you to know, I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America’s fundamental principles, from the rule of law, to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power.
The invocation of America’s fundamental principles, in turn, laid the predicate for a criticism of Trump as threatening them:
In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious.
And the critique of Trump led into the last half or so of the speech, which consisted of a pitch for more-or-less centrist domestic policies— including the bipartisan border bill that Trump torpedoed—and a robust endorsement of America’s necessary and distinctive role in the world.
Overall, the vision was kind of Bill Clinton (with a touch of Jack Kemp) at home, and John McCain abroad, with a hefty dose of John F. Kennedy-Ronald Reagan patriotism throughout. Harris even offered a striking endorsement of American exceptionalism:
I see an America where we hold fast to the fearless belief that built our nation and inspired the world . . . We are the heirs to the greatest democracy in the history of the world.
It is now our turn to do what generations before us have done, guided by optimism and faith, to fight for this country we love, to fight for the ideals we cherish and to uphold the awesome responsibility that comes with the greatest privilege on Earth: the privilege and pride of being an American.
With this speech, and with this convention as a whole, we have come a long way—the Democratic party has come a long way—from the identity and grievance politics of the left. Harris and Tim Walz have laid the predicate for a center-oriented, optimistic, and patriotic campaign. Consider the final tally. The terms America, American, Americans were uttered 34 times; country or nation, 20 times; freedom, 12 times; opportunity, 6 times; Democrats or Democratic party, 0 times.
It won’t be smooth sailing ahead. Trump and his campaign will go after them. And the left won’t simply be quiet. So there will be challenges aplenty.
Still, the prospects for the next two months seem pretty good to me.
But enough of all this unaccustomed good cheer. We need to start worrying about the debate. It’s only two-and-a-half weeks away.
While Kamala Harris was giving her terrific speech last night, Trump was live-tweeting on his favorite site. He was outraged!
Andrew Eggers wrote:
When things are going well and he’s feeling good, Donald Trump can sometimes be cajoled by his team into something resembling discipline. When things are going badly, he’s much more prone to publicly venting some spleen.
So perhaps the greatest measure of the effectiveness of Kamala Harris’s convention speech was the truly unhinged content bender it sent Trump spiraling into last night.
It started on Truth Social, where Trump informed us he had “assembled a small group of people, GREAT PATRIOTS ALL,” to watch Harris’s “puff piece.”
At first, Trump was jocular: “A lot of talk about childhood,” he wrote as Harris told her personal history, “we’ve got to get to the Border, Inflation, and Crime!”
Soon, though, the wheels were coming off. “These Prosecutions were all started by her and Biden against her Political Opponent, ME!” Trump fumed as Harris turned to his legal troubles. “IS SHE TALKING ABOUT ME?”
A random sampling of what followed:
- “LYING AGAIN ABOUT PROJECT 2025, WHICH SHE KNOWS, AND SO DO ALL DEMOCRATS, THAT I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH!”
- “She just called to give all Illegals CITIZENSHIP, SAY GOODBYE TO THE U.S.A.! SHE IS A RADICAL MARXIST!”
- “Walz was an ASSISTANT Coach, not a COACH.”
- “SHE HAS LED US INTO FAILING NATION STATUS!”
- “WHERE’S HUNTER?”
But posting, it turned out, wasn’t enough to soothe Trump’s jangled nerves. After the speech, he dialed into Fox News for still more free-associative complaining, bowling right over Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum’s attempts to get in specific questions, seemingly pressing phone buttons with his face as he talked. They eventually had to cut him off mid-sentence to wrap up their show.
Not to worry, though: When they pull the plug on you on Fox, there’s always Newsmax. So Trump picked up the phone again. “I will tell you, I just watched it,” he told Greg Kelly and Mercedes Schlapp a few moments later. “She didn’t talk about many things, like interest rates, China, fracking anywhere, let alone Pennsylvania, crime, poverty, trade deficits, child trafficking, woman trafficking, drugs, the border—she didn’t talk about the most important things.”
Did he get the bile out of his system? Trump’s rallying in Arizona this afternoon; I guess we’ll find out then.

This is the perfect example of the enemy of your enemy is simply your enemy’s enemy, nothing more. Neocon Republicans are delighted that the Democrats have become the neocon party without all that tea-bagger crap. They reveled in the open display of American exceptionalism and war-mongering and bloodlust last night with bare lip-service for the suffering of people here at home. Bill Kristol is not your friend simply because he said Orange Man Bad.
P.S., I’m begging liberals/Democrats to actually read the lyrics to “Born in the USA”. Hint, it’s not a patriotic song. It used to be only Republicans who didn’t understand that.
LikeLike
There was no open display of war-mongering and bloodlust.
Am I remembering right that like the neocons, you have also railed about “identity politics” to insult Dems? If I am wrong about that, I apologize.
You made lots of vague attacks, but can you be more specific about what you didn’t like that Kamala said? Is it that she has promised to keep supporting Ukraine, something you rabidly objected to just like Trump and the Republicans?
Just silly to pretend that if only America gets out of the way, the world will be a wonderful place. Kamala doesn’t want war. Neither did Neville Chamberlain. But sometimes just standing back and retreating into our shell and signalling a red light causes a lot more harm than good. It would be far easier to put pressure on Netanyahu and Putin if the promise of a Donald Trump presidency and the Republican power-grab didn’t make it easier for them to reject pressure.
What policies do you advocate for the border? What policies do you advocate for Israel-Palestine? Unless your goal is open borders in the US and the annihilation of the state of Israel, then your goals are likely not far off from Bernie Sanders’ goals and AOC’s goals and Kamala’s foreign policy goals. How to get there IN A DEMOCRACY where Republicans still have a lot of power is not easy. Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was criticized endlessly as a complete and utter failure by the liars who claimed there was some perfect way to do that where everything would be roses and rainbows. There are no easy choices and if you don’t see the difference between having a responsible grown up with the right values in the room versus Trump, then that’s on you. If you think Bernie and AOC are now evil neocons because they understand the complexities and aren’t using their bullhorn to tell the world your “truth” – that Kamala and the Dems are war-mongers full of blood lust – that’s on you.

Yeah, okay, promising the “most lethal” fighting force isn’t a display of war-mongering and bloodlust. If that’s what you need to believe. But be aware it lost her votes on the progressive side without gaining her votes on the conservative side (which said side thinks she’s a “commie” and wouldn’t vote for her if she personally assassinated Putin).

wow, you are grasping at straws. It’s so weird that you have this double standard where you can find something to support your mischaracterization that the Dems are evil warmongering folks full of blood lust in Kamala’s speech, but make all kinds of excuses for far more extreme despicable and evil behavior from the Republicans and Putin.
And I am doubtful that votes from progressives who planned to vote for Kamala before the speech were lost. Do you mean she lost votes from Putin-loving leftists who said it didn’t matter if Trump won in 2016 because having a Dem appoint Justices that would overturn Citizens United had little value and a Republican appointing Justices that would enshrine right wing anti-democracy was of little concern? Because those folks were NEVER going to vote for a Dem, period.

The far-left voters who enable Trump will be unhappy if their abstention from voting helps him win. How will they crow about their glorious “victory” when he opens his detention camps for millions of people? And when he passes a national abortion ban? And when he embraces Netanyahu and tells him he can do whatever he wants in Gaza?
Judy Woodruff reported on PBS that Trump told Netanyahu not to make a peace deal because when he is elected, he can demolish Gaza.

Yep, Springsteen wrote that song in 1984, a response to Reagan and the fake “morning in America”. In many ways, it’s appropriate for the Democrats, because Kamala’s speech invoked the different America Springsteen believed in. His song invoked the false “great” America that Trump and the Republicans want to return us to, that the Dems do not.
Ironically, Trump does seem to know what the song means. From a RI newspaper article: “In May 2024, things came full circle when Donald Trump, the putative GOP presidential candidate, name-checked Springsteen at a New Jersey rally. But this time, the candidate wasn’t praising the Garden State troubadour.
He called Springsteen a “wacko,” before claiming that the Boss and other “liberal singers” had nonetheless voted for him in 2020. Then Trump falsely added that his crowds outnumbered Springsteen’s.”
I think the Dems playing the song was another way to get under Trump’s skin.

Duane,
You have to admit that this ticket is almost miraculous, given the origins of Kamala and Tim. Both came from unremarkable middle-class families. Kamala and her sister were raised by their immigrant mother; they were not born into wealth and privilege like Trump. They went to public schools; Trump went to expensive private schools.
Walz was born into a family lacking wealth and privilege. He comes from a family of teachers. You know the story. As governor, he refused to accept a pay raise. He’s a humble plain-spoken man. He has a small net worth, compared to other governors and members of Congress. Most of consists of his and Gwen’s pensions as the hers. Compare his plain life with that of JD Vance, who is a multimillionaire after he moved into the hedge fund world and was sponsored by Peter Thiel, the woman-hating billionaire.

Curious where you’d put Joe Biden’s 4 years of presidency on the political spectrum – the left side or the right? I’d put Kamala a little to the left of Biden. I don’t judge Biden on whether Bill Kristol thinks he is centrist or not, nor would I judge Kamala that way. But wherever on the spectrum you’d place Biden, I’d put Kamala a bit to the left, but jury is out as to how much.
In terms of your other question about what’s wrong with that thought – I can acknowledge the hyperbole but also a bit of truth. Are there similar stories in other nations where a teenage immigrant from India and an immigrant from Jamaica come to a new country for their college education, get married, have 2 mixed-race daughters, get divorced leaving a working single mom raising 2 daughters, the oldest of whom went on to attend a HBCU, a public law school, and become the first female VP and possibly president? In a way, Obama has a similar story – a young middle class woman born in Kansas, eventually moves with to Hawaii with her family soon after Hawaii becomes a state. She marries a man from Africa who came for an education, and ends up being a single mom of a mixed race child who becomes the first Black president of the country.
Are there many countries where kids of immigrants become president?
Sure it’s hyperbole to call America the greatest nation on earth, but I wouldn’t object if a Swedish leader or British leader or Canadian leader said their country was the greatest on earth. It’s what they are referring to that matters. Putin sees “great” meaning it has conquered Ukraine and created a greater Russia. Trump voters see “great” as returning to the time when white people had more power.
But Kamala is referring to great as meaning that America is a place of opportunity, where despite its many flaws, it is still possible for things to happen that would have seemed impossible to happen when I was a kid. Is our flawed, imperfect country “the greatest” at giving opportunities to everyone? Maybe not, but most of us are descended from people who came here from very little or even came here in bondage or were always here and created a country were opportunities are not yet equal, and many problems remain, but there are far more opportunities for their kids than there were a few decades ago.

Harris delivered a message of unity and hope and to our fractured nation. Her vision is one of inclusion and opportunity for all. She promised to build on Biden’s policies to rebuild the middle class. Is her message centrist or progressive? While it was difficult to categorize her political intention, her message certainly was collectivist, but not communist. Regardless, she intends to try to treat all members of our society with dignity and respect so we can build a stronger country where there is a place for everyone to share in its success. She will continue to support our allies and partners around the globe.
Another part of her address was the part that caused the orange menace to flip out was the prosecution of Donald Trump. She did a great job outlining his flaws and his crimes. Harris showed she has a vision for the future, and she is ready to serve.
I hope to see the Democrats develop better messaging about the economy. I am tired of reading polls about how the public believes that GOP is better for the economy when the facts fail to support that assertion. Republican leadership has repeatedly left us with a larger deficit, and the only time the GOP cares about the deficit is when Democrats are in charge. Democrats may spend more on social programs, but they have not left us digging out from under a massive recession.

Harris certainly have a speech that places her in an electable position in a country that has been tricked into almost a half century of moving to the right. That the American nation is solidly on the right side of any political spectrum should be very obvious. No one will ever get this generation of voters back to a real center.
So we will see what happens. Memes are already flooding the memeosphere suggesting that Harris is a Socialist, a Communist, or a leftist. This follows a practice common to every election since the bloody shirt ran out and the “progressive era” introduced the idea of business regulation, paired though it was with xenophobia and eugenics. The practice of calling anything the business sector want to kill “communism” has been a part of politics since those days. At no time has there been a solid “left” in American political life like there was in Europe.
So Harris is electable, and might move the needle a bit toward reason and kindness. The alternative is so dangerous that defectors like Adam Kinsinger are stepping up to say what they should have said when Samuel Alito was first offered as a choice for the court.
