The following letter was sent to Vice President Kamala Harris by advocates for public schools from across the nation. They pointed out that public schools, attended by 50 million students, are being harmed by privatization programs, which force public schools to cut budgets, lay off teachers, and eliminate courses and activities. Voucher schools are allowed to discriminate against. Students they don’t want: students with disabilities, students with low test scores, LGBT, and students of a different religion. For the past decade, research concurs that vouchers actually harm poor kids, who lose academic ground. Most vouchers are amused by students who already attend private and religious schools.
They urged VP Harris to reject Pennnsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro because of his support for vouchers. They urged her to support someone with a strong record of opposing privatization, like Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky or Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota

It’s a good letter. In a two party system Democrats tend to take teachers and academics for granted, and it is frustrating. Money fuels campaigns. I read that Reed Hastings recently gave $7 million to a super PAC for the Harris’ campaign so who knows if that money comes with strings attached?

This is a good letter, and I agree with it. Nevertheless, like many, I will vote for Harris regardless of her VP running mate even if I have to hold my nose because of Shapiro.
I can think of at least three very hypothetical scenarios…
(1) Shipiro is the running mate; this helps Harris win PA, and PA makes the difference in the Electoral College for Harris winning.
(2) Based on Harris/Shapiro winning, somebody who doesn’t favor vouchers replaces Shapiro as the governor of PA. And as a typical VP (unlike Dick Cheney), Shapiro has very little power or influence (particularly with regard to education).
(3) Harris doesn’t select Shapiro and barely loses PA’s electoral votes that she might have otherwise had with Shapiro as her running mate. And the election is so close that losing PA’s electoral votes causes Harris to lose the election to Trump (heaven forbid!).
So I’m not a fan of Shapiro, and I think it’s important to put first things first. Obviously, beating Trump should be the first priority. Otherwise, vouchers may be the least of our problems.

If democracy is truly at stake, vouchers seem like a small detail.

Considering that we fought privatization policies under both Obama and Trump, it may be a matter of whose privatization policies you’d rather fight. Both were bad, but not equally as bad. But hopefully a Harris administration won’t support any privatization policies.

I totally agree with the view that removing a Governor who supports vouchers and making him Vice President is very pragmatic. As Vice President he would not have authority over Department of Education. Point 2 is spot on!
Circular firing ranges are not pragmatic.
This election is important for the world, not just the United States.
Pennsylvania has more electoral votes than Arizona, even though I find the idea of a fighter pilot, astronaut celebrity useful for getting votes.
If only Birch Bayh had succeeded in abolishing the electoral college!

POTUS and the VP are intimately connected. Not a good idea to choose a VP whose ideas you detest. That person might well have the president’s ear a lot, and the president can delegate whole areas of policy to him or her.

I wonder if they’ll ever rebrand the Electoral College as the Electoral University 🙂

Win! That is the only VP selection criteria in my book.
Fight the education battle and others the day the day after.
This same comment was not popular when many criticized President Obama, Secretary Clinton, (actually President Clinton and the governors, too), President Biden, and others who leaned charter, privatization, testing, and/or accountability.

Duane,
Have Missouri teacher unions taken a stance on Missouri Constitutional Amendment 1 regarding property taxes on day care facilities?
Thank you!

I have just spent 25 minutes trying to find out about this issue. I can barely find anything. It was proposed by the legislature which is controlled by the Rethugs. My guess is that it is a camel’s nose in the tent to eventually get funding for private/religious/homeschools and/or tax breaks for charter schools. I’ll be voting against it.
As far as the “unions”. The MoNEA is nothing but a mouthpiece for the status quo. I saw nothing about it on their election recommendations. AFT? Don’t know much about but in MO any educational/health care unions have little say or power due to not being able to strike.
If anyone else knows anything about it please chime in. Jessica Piper???

Perfect! The faux promise presented by venture capitalists simply has not worked and was only intended to pad such corporatist’s wallets. This thirty to forty year experiment has not come close to fulfilling the promise promoted by such advocates. It’s time to reinvest in the common school.
