Jim Hightower is a Texas populist who has observed the state’s hard rightward swing with dismay. In this post, he flays the profiteers who are attacking teachers and public schools. You should consider subscribing to his blog.
He writes here in honor of teachers:
I’m a child of privilege. Not the privilege of money (I come from a family of small-town working people). But it was my privilege to grow up in the public schools of Denison, Texas.
There I received the rich blessings of dedicated classroom teachers, a diverse student body, playground socialization, librarians, coaches, cafeteria and custodial workers, student politics, vocational training… and a deep appreciation for the unifying value of community and the Common Good.
That’s why I’m flabbergasted by today’s clique of corporate profiteers, theocratic zealots, and laissez-faire knuckleheads who’re lobbying furiously across the country to demonize, defund, and dismantle this invaluable social benefit. If ignorance is bliss, they must be ecstatic!
Public schools do have some real problems: Politicians constantly slashing education budgets, professional burnout created by understaffing and low pay, the devastating strain of a killer pandemic, and a new-normal of assault-rifle murders. But the profiteers, theocrats, and knuckleheads aren’t interested in those, instead focusing on what they say is the fatal flaw in public education: Teachers.
Yes, the claim is that diabolical educators are perverting innocent minds by teaching America’s actual history, showing students that the full diversity of humankind enriches our society, and presenting our Earth as something to be protected, not plundered. And worse – OMIGOSH – many classroom teachers are union members! So, teachers suddenly find themselves political pawns in the GOP’s culture war. “Our schools are a cesspool of Marxist indoctrination,” squawked Sen. Marco Rubio, and Donald Trump squealed that schools are run by “radical left maniacs” and “pink-haired communists.”
These right-wing Chicken Littles are demonizing America’s invaluable educators because they need someone for people to hate, providing cover for their unpopular plot to privatize education. But hate can easily backfire on hatemongers – and local teachers are a whole lot more popular than conniving politicos and profiteers.
“Conniving politicos and profiteers” and the RELIGIOUS RIGHT.
Conduct an internet search for randomly selected state Catholic Conferences and school choice.
In Indiana and Florida, conservative Catholics take credit for initiating and getting the passage of school choice legislation.
Religious News reported that the preferred source of news for about half of the bishops is FOX.
In other news, CNN tries to set a match to Democracy. 2016, again.
You need a little cheer. The more the merrier and the sooner the better .

Joel, they need much more than housing for 200 families.

I did say the more the merrier!
We should start a go fund me page, to bring the program up to scale. Putin needs the meat for the grinder in Ukraine he ran out of prisoners.
This is a great idea. Ship them all to Siberia.
Sounds like a Netflix sitcom in the making…
Naming the sects of the politically influential “theocrats” Hightower mentions, that would be novel.
The tribalists who are members of the sect that is 25% of the American voters, whether they are conservative or liberal, don’t want their sects’ right wing politicking for school choice to be exposed.
A school privatizing advocate, commenter Michael, in another thread, presumably, is so religion-addled that when he boasts he knows the, “shared values that we all agree on,” has full confidence he’s right.
And, a religion-addled liberal at the blog wants equal coverage for all religions no matter how little their impact nor how small the number of conservatives in the sect are. He trots out the right wing talking point from the Russian playbook, “what aboutism” to deflect attention. Btw- Putin is orthodox Christian.

“And, a religion-addled liberal at the blog wants equal coverage for all religions no matter how little their impact nor how small the number of conservatives in the sect are”.
So here are the Pew statistics on voting and religion. It would be disingenuous to say that the Catholic Church had more influence on its parishioners than Protestant denominations or that the number of White Catholics is even close to the number of White Protestants. Hispanic Catholics may cloud the picture a bit. While 27 US Senators are Catholic only 12 are Republican.
As you rightly point out the Catholic Church has had an outsized influence working with White Protestants to appoint
Judges. But they are not the driving force in the Religious Rights political power . 12 out of 49 Republican Senators 2 of whom are wrongly considered less revolting than the rest .
Now as for the Ultra Orthodox Cult that pretends to be Jewish they would be as revolting if they had the numbers. 83% voting for Trump a close second to White Evangelical Christians and I would not want to live in the communities they dominate. Every bit as intolerant as the other fascist loving …………….

Big shift since 2008, 4 in 10 White Catholic registered voters -Republican. Now, it’s 6 in 10.
New since 2008, seismic shift number 1– right wing politicized Catholics work to defeat the election of Democratic Catholic politicians who believe in women’s rights. Seismic shift 2, right wing politicized Catholics share an economic agenda with a major funder of GOP campaigns.
Protestants don’t refer to all other sects as non-protestant.
I’m guessing it’s because they recognize denominational differences, for example Black churches. Is it your perception that protestant religious leaders operate cohesively for political issues like school choice, anti-abortion, against women’s and gay rights? If so, FYI. Where are the individual, protestant denomination, state conferences? Are they .3 a mile from the capitol with a staff of 6 including a paid lobbyist? How many of the denominations hire as executive director, people who work with AEI, worked for EdChoice and Koch’s Heritage?
Joel,
You acknowledged in a different thread that media doesn’t discuss the politicking of right wing Catholics. I could identify a couple of journalists writing in mainstream media who push the Christian angle omitting Catholic. Is there an equivalent among the denominations of protestants?
If so, they’re losing.
“If they had the numbers”..if they had the political apparatus,…if they had coffers, equal in size to the pool that the bishops draw from…etc. A lot of meaningless ifs that aren’t reality.
Who is the Ivy League Constitutional law professor from an African Methodist Episcopalian Church (AME) that is equivalent to Adrian Vermuele who said preference should be given to Catholic immigrants? Vermuele is described as the most dangerous critic of liberalism in the nation. If there’s an equivalent from any protestant denomination, the public should be informed.

Trump has zero experience in public schools – he knows no public school teachers. Pink hair? C’mon. Other than viewing public school teachers as his next scam or rape victims, he has nothing to do with them. Those who are responsible gatekeepers to public forums (I’m looking at you CNN) need to limit and fact check this serial liar and demagogue.
Teachers are convenient scapegoat and target of the all the privatizers, right wing extremists and religious zealots. Each of these groups has clear, explicit motives to undermine public education. They seek to transfer public funds out of public schools and into private entities including religious schools and those that discriminate against students based on race and sexual orientation. Their bogus, fabricated outrage is a political tool to disparage teachers and public education. People with common sense that reject conspiracy theories and lies understand that the slanderous attacks are largely politically motivated fabrication.
“There I received the rich blessings of dedicated classroom teachers, a diverse student body, playground socialization, librarians, coaches, cafeteria and custodial workers, student politics, vocational training… and a deep appreciation for the unifying value of community and the Common Good.”
You mean this is a better education than students sitting at a small group table sounding out 1 syllable words from a basil reader?
Hmmm…coming from people like Trump…“It was 30 or 35 questions. The first questions are very easy. The last questions are much more difficult. Like a memory question,” Trump continued. “It’s like, you’ll go, ‘Person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ So they say, ‘Could you repeat that?’ So I said, ‘Yeah.’ So it’s, ‘Person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ OK, that’s very good. If you get it in order, you get extra points.” Wow! And then just recently revealed, “I don’t know who – it’s Marla,” Trump said when shown the photo. “That’s Marla, yeah. That’s my wife,” he says when asked to clarify. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, then interjected and said “no, that’s Carroll,” according to the transcript. Wow! These people are sooooo afraid that teachers will teach children HOW TO THINK (as oppose to what to think) to see through the fog they are creating. Tired of the liars and the cheaters.
Diane and All The below is forwarded FYI . . . it is reposted here from the National Literacy Association (from one long-time researcher) of a brief history of mothers as educators and so of the crossover between informal education that occurs in the home, and formal education that occurs by professional teachers in K-12 education. Mother’s Day: Celebrating Mothers as the Elixir of Children’s Literacy
Tom Sticht, International Consultant in Adult Education (Ret.)
Sunday May 14, 2023 is Mother’s Day in the United States. Adult literacy educators have long known about the importance of educating mothers or mothers-to-be for the educational development of children. Here is a small selection of articles and other published works spanning almost a century demonstrating the importance of mother’s education on the subsequent development of children by their children.
1929 – Stewart, C. (1929). Mother’s First Book: A First Reader for Home Women. (Available online using a Google search).
In 1929, Cora Wilson Stewart, founder of the famous Moonlight Schools of Kentucky, wrote a book called “Mother’s First Book: A First Reader for Home Women.” The lessons are centered around the home and the daily activities … they aim not only at teaching women to read and write, but at leading them to better home practices and higher ideals in their home and community life” (Stewart, 1929, pp. 5-6).
1990 – Sticht, T. & McDonald, B. (1990). Teach the Mother and Reach the Child: Literacy across Generations. Literacy Lessons, UNESCO. Online at: https://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED321063
Significant reductions in adult illiteracy can be achieved most cost-effectively by focusing more resources on the education of women. These monies contribute not only to women’s development but also to the educational achievement of their children. Educated mothers have more influence on their children’s education; the children become literate adults who, in turn, produce more educable children. Maternal education also has an effect on fertility rates and the mortality and health of children. The contribution of educated mothers to the cognitive and language skills of preschool children gives the children an advantage and continues to affect their educational success.
2012 – LeVine, R., LeVine, S., Schnell-Anzola, B., Rowe, M., & Dexter, E. (2012.Literacy and Mothering: How Women’s Schooling Changes the Lives of the World’s Children. Oxford University Press. Online at: https://academic.oup.com/book/3384
Data are presented on the literacy skills and maternal behavior of mothers in four countries – Mexico, Nepal, Venezuela and Zambia – finding that literacy and language skills acquired in school were retained into a woman’s child-bearing years, that literacy mediates the effect of schooling on a mother’s comprehension of health messages in print and broadcast media and on her health navigation skill … Literacy also influences mothers’ tendencies to talk and read to their young children. (see review of book online at: https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/ed/12/09/illiteracy)
Sticht, T. (2018), Educating mothers to increase family literacy. Online at: https://www.proliteracy.org/Blogs/Article/373/Educating-Mothers-to-Increase-Family-Literacy
Research by Wider Opportunities for Women found that mothers enrolled in basic skills (literacy, numeracy) education, often integrated with job training, reported that they spoke more with their children about school, they read to them more, they took them to the library more and so forth. These increases in cognitive and non-cognitive behaviors of the mothers’ children happened even though there was no teaching of these types of parenting activities. These types of changes in the parenting behaviors of the mothers was obtained for free as a spin-off of adult basic skills programs.
2022 – Lyesmaya, D., Musthafa, B., & Sunendar, D. (2022. The Role of Mother’s Education and Early Skills in Language and Literacy Learning Opportunities, International Journal of Learning, Teaching and Educational Research. Online at: https://www.ijlter.org/index.php/ijlter/article/view/5752
Mother’s education and learners’ early abilities were positively correlated with learners’ language and literacy learning opportunities. Learners who have mothers with a high level of education receive significant opportunities to learn language and literacy compared to those with mothers with a low level of education. Therefore, their language skills are superior…. Mother’s education and child’s early skills really help children in language and literacy learning.
2023 – Yu, S. (2023). The Influence of Mothers’ Educational Level on Children’s Comprehensive Quality. Journal of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences. Online at: https://drpress.org/ojs/index.php/EHSS/article/view/4461
Effects of mothers’ education on the comprehensive quality of children in three dimensions: Firstly, with regard to physical quality, mothers’ education level strengthens the prevention and treatment of illness and diseases and also fosters a healthier living lifestyle for children. Secondly, mothers’ education level benefits the development of children’s cognitive quality, individuality quality, and adaptability quality. Thirdly, children’s science and cultural literacy are affected by educated mothers.
Yu’s paper sums up many reasons for celebrating the contributions of mothers to the literacy development and other developmental outcomes of children:
“In conclusion, mothers with higher educational attainment can promote the comprehensive quality of their children and help support the sustainable development of society.”
Definition: Elixir: Cambridge English Dictionary: a substance, usually a liquid, with a magical power to cure, improve, or preserve something.

This is, truly, awful, to note, that the politicians get to, write and/or rewrite history, to, eradicate what’s already happened in the collective past of history of mankind, and, taint the young minds today, and, there’s nothing that the parents want to, or can do about it, because, they had all been, brainwashed themselves too! And, they’re, “making” the next generations of, highly educated (by degree) voters, who are, ignorant, and, the future of the countries are all going to be, ruined…
