A quote from Cynthia Nixon on why she is more qualified to be governor of New York than Cuomo:
“My chief of staff has not been convicted on three counts of bribery — that’s a start,” she said, referring to Cuomo confidant Joseph Percoco’s legal troubles. Then she added, “I actually know the MTA is controlled by the state.”

Cynthia Nixon is a breath of fresh air–articulate, amusing, smart, informed, and so far a progressive insurgent. Like Bernie’s campaign, she will need massive crowd sourcing to compete with Cuomo’s Wall St War Chest. If she can be financed from the bottom up, she will stay independent longer from the Dem Party insiders. Pushing her to make war on the billionaire class, on the cronies in both parties and in the teachers’ union, and the private sector matters to reverse the enormous damage to public education, public housing, public transit, public parks, public colleges, public hospitals, and public funding of arts, kids and seniors.

Nixon has received more small donations in the few days since she announced than Cuomo has in eight years. He is Governor Plutocrat.

I’m glad that the ideological purists aren’t dismissing Nixon because of her previous support for Hillary and Obama. Nice to know that they can give their straitjackets (or straightjackets) a momentary rest. It is refreshing to have a candidate who is PRO public schools and actually sends her kids to the public schools. Hurrah! It will be a tough race, not all of NY state is as liberal/progressive as NYC is supposed to be. NYC is liberal and yet most of the big radio talk stations are far right wing cesspools.

Pretty appalling dismissal of the Nixon candidacy by Mary Elizabeth Williams in Salon. Managed not to mention public education or any other the myriad ways Cuomo fails the citizens of New York.

Did she find anything good to say about Cuomo?
Does she like the way Cuomo has protected Republican control of the State Senate?
For sure she didn’t mention that his $31 Million war chest has almost no small contribution.
Or that he has pronounced his love for charters and tried to enact vouchers.

Nothing good about Cuomo…her only criticism was that he was “underwhelming.” Her arguments—she has not experience-were underwhelming considering the political context..

From Williams’ Salon piece:
“Over the months to come, Nixon will have to unveil detailed descriptions of her proposals for improving the state. Having Teachout as her treasurer suggests she’s surrounding herself with more politically experienced veterans. She’s also reportedly recruited Rebecca Katz and Bill Hyers, who worked on New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s first campaign. Along the way, she may persuade voters like me that she can then get things done, from the Rockaways to Rochester. That she has an understanding of the process of governing….”
I thought Williams’ Salon piece was very premature. Nixon just announced and she could have waited.
On the other hand, as much as I didn’t like it, I read the above paragraph as this being a writer simply expressing her own ideas and open to be convinced. I think it is not a bad idea for Nixon to be thinking now about how to reach people from this perspective.
I recall back in 2000 or so seeing Hillary Clinton doing a “listening tour” upstate in which she WAS listening and it wasn’t just for show. She was actually spending time talking and listening to the people who had doubts about her candidacy and I think that tour went a very long way to convincing them to support this outsider from Arkansas who wasn’t a real New Yorker that she could still represent their interests. I suspect had she done more of that in 2016 she might be President.
I hope Nixon takes a lesson from this. She should be concentrating on LISTENING to people and their concerns. For real. She’s a very smart woman and I think she’d make a great Governor. I hope she can convince people like this Salon writer — who I absolutely believe IS “convincible” — that she will listen and think about their concerns.

If I have to choose between a newcomer to politics who shares my values and an experienced politician who does not, I will vote for the former. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are very experienced. So is Andrew Cuomo.

Norwegian Filmmaker,
Why wouldn’t I be positively inclined toward Nixon? She stands for pretty much everything I support, as far as I can tell. I’m just surprised you haven’t decided she is just another fake progressive.
I want to make sure she takes this campaign seriously, though. I wasn’t kidding about the listening tour. If she wants to be Governor, she should do what Hillary did when she first ran for Senate and really devote herself to listening and talking to people. It’s very hard work.
I’d probably vote for almost anyone over Cuomo — including a decent Republican. My thoughts about Cuomo are similar to yours about Hillary Clinton. I just base mine on reality and you don’t : ) (Sorry, I could not resist).
But I’ve watched Cuomo govern for 8 years and do his best to undermine public schools and he should be defeated. Period. I voted for Zephyr last time. I hope Nixon takes this seriously.

She seems courageous and focused, along with being a strong supporter of public schools. Maybe Williams can get the Rachel Maddow Award…

Salon is a very neoliberal, Establishment-protecting site these days. No dissent allowed.

If this is so, it should not be very hard for you to find, let’s say, three neoliberal articles within a week back from today. Or, maybe you can define what is neoliberal to you. Wikipedia defines neoliberalism as ideas that include economic liberalization policies such as privatization, austerity, deregulation, free trade and reductions in government spending in order to increase the role of the private sector in the economy and society. I haven’t noticed Salon peddling privatization or reduction in government spending.

I HATE when people say that Cynthia Nixon has no experience. They are RIGHT. She has no experience.
And Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell and RIchard Kasich Jr. have TONS and TONS of outright political experience, and look at what they are doing to our country and society.
I would vote for Nixon any day because her politics are in the right place even if her experience in politics is just beginning.
