GregB, a regular reader and commenter, left the following thoughts about the four years ahead of us:
“I commented on another site today about Al Franken that “it took a great comedian to show DC what a great senator looks like.” The perverse reality we live in today is amplified by the fact that comedians give us better news and analysis than “journalists.” Think of Jon Stewart and Jon Oliver as great examples. Tonight Samantha Bee had the best expose of hypocrisy of Kellyanne Conway and how “journalists” can’t cut through her bs. But her interview with exiled Russian dissident journalist (no quotes) Masha Gessen was amazing. Here’s a quick checklist of things that Gessen went through that Donald’s regime will likely do which mirrors Putin.
First pre-election speculation if Donald were to win:
— it feels like we’re staring into an abyss
Post election things to expect (most efforts to successfully resist that she knows of have failed and her biggest worry is a nuclear holocaust):
— he’s certain to do irreparable harm to the environment that will make the survival of the human species impossible,
— the impossibility of going on to democracy after Trump
(after Bee does a chart that shows what the path is to rock bottom, what low points do you expect to see in our near future?)
— he’s going to lift the sanctions against Russia
— he’s going to start banning one newspaper after the other from the White House
— he is going to start thinking about wars
— he is going to go to the Putin model of holding one press conference per year
— suppose some cities refuse to cooperate with deportation, so he calls on the American people to start reporting on immigrants, and that’s when we start getting into really disgusting territory
— that will be the beginning of the culture of citizen against citizen
— so there’s a Russian joke: We thought we had reached rock bottom and then someone knocked from below
— (in language) he’s very similar to Putin, he uses language to assert his power over reality
— what he’s saying is “I create the right to say whatever the hell I please and what are you going to do about it?”
— it’s instinctual, it’s like a bully in a playground
— the point is to render you completely powerless
— because everything you know how to do (to point out reality) is useless
— the thing to do to resist is to continue panicking, to keep being the hysteric in the room and say, “This is not normal”
— just remember why you’re panicking, write a note to yourself about what you would never do, and when you come to the line, don’t cross it
Thanks Samantha and Masha. It would have been good advice in Germany 1933 and seems apt for the US in 2017.

Great points, but she left something out: as an editorial in the NYT pointed out recently, the only thing that ultimately took Berlusconi, Italy’s leader, out of power was a relentless focus on the effects of his policies, rather than an obsession with his outlandish personality.
Pay close attention to the man behind the curtain, Dorothy!

Dmitri, my Russian control agent, has asked me to point out that hysterical (and still unproven, btw), hair-on-fire claims of Russian Evil is a guaranteed strategic and tactical loser that does nothing to pry away those Trump supporters who can be reached.
Dmitri also wants me to point out that continuing to rely on demonizing Russia to de-legitimize a US politician sets a very dangerous precedent, one that is likely to come back and bite Democrats, especially pwogwessive ones, in their posteriors in the future. It also suggests the kind of dirty and opaque politics we’ve come to expect in repressive societies like Russia.
After all, did the Big Bad Vlad lose both houses of Congress for the Dems? Did he cause their near-total wipe-out on the state level over the years (and before you talk about Republican gerrymandering, please recall that Obama/the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress from 2008-2010, so he bears much responsibility for that, as well). Did Putin force Obama to coddle and further enrich criminal bankers in the aftermath of the worst financial crisis in 80 years, and ignore attacks on organized labor, as we saw in Wisconsin?
Dmitri thinks that Trump is perhaps the most significant part of Obama’s legacy, and if that reality is not faced, The Orange One is strengthened, not weakened. Putin, too, for that matter.
Lastly, Dmitri wants me to say that Trump, and Putin as well, are probably quite content to have their adversaries expending their energies so wastefully, rather than facing the much more difficult task of coming up with ways to re-orient and re-organize the Democratic Party around long term winning strategies. You know, things like offering concrete help to working people, rather than neoliberal trade deals and Human Capital Management-friendly identitarian politics.
But then, I’m a Trumpian/Russian dupe and propaganda conduit, so what do I know?

Michael,
There is also the strong likelihood that Russian hacking did help elect Trump.
Your satire does not reduce the seriousness of foreign meddling in our election.
Are you defensive because it is Russia? Russia is a kleptocracy. Why defend them?Putin is a thug.

As of now, assertions of Russian interference in the presidential election are no more than that: assertions unaccompanied by proof of any kind. Those assertions have also been made by agencies with long records of lying to the American public, by the way.
Does Russia spy on the US? Of course it does, just as we spy on them. That’s what States do, among other things: spy on friends and adversaries alike (just as Israel has spied/is spying on its number one ally and patron, as we presumably spy on them).
Let’s assume every charge made against Putin concerning the 2016 election is true (please also keep in mind documented proof of US “meddling” in post-Soviet Russian elections, or is that OK because “we” did it?); my point is that even if true it’s the least of our problems, since nobody is claiming he gave Congress to the Republicans, or the 32 state houses they control. That process has taken years, has Obama’s and the Clinton’s fingerprints all over it, and was Made-In-America, by Americans. Constantly repeating evidence-free “assessments” by intelligence agencies does nothing to stop Trump or organize resistance to his agenda. In fact, it establishes the dangerous precedent of seeking to give intelligence agencies veto power over our elections.
That almost sounds like something Putin would do.
In fact, there’s a thought: Putin is so evil, so devious and ingenious, that he is manipulating the Democratic Party to call into question our elections and very democracy, thus weakening us further!
I hope people can see where the absurdity of all this takes us.
Finally, regarding my “defensiveness” about Russia, I prefer to think I’m “defensive” of the truth and allergic to propaganda and the self-serving delusions and mis-directions of people who spent a billion dollars losing to the most unpopular and unqualified presidential candidate in history.
Every moment spent worrying about what Putin may or may not have done is a moment spent ignoring the Made-In-America reasons we find ourselves where we are today, many of which are intimately connected to the abandonment of working people by the Democratic Party, and it’s preposterous delusion that demography and Sheryl Sandberg-type identity politics are a substitute for respecting people and fighting to meet their needs.
Yes, Putin’s behavior is/can be thuggish, but it’s a very bad mistake to think he’s no more than a thug, and it’s an even worse mistake to think Trump can be resisted by screaming about Russian Boogeymen.
It’s fair to assume Big Bad Vlad wanted Trump elected over Clinton, as a three minute look at their rhetoric concerning Russia will show. Putin likely also preferred Trump because he knows that DonniePrez, via incompetence and dishonesty (and forgetting silly claims about golden showers and blackmail), will accelerate our rapid decline, and thus perhaps reduce what he (with more than some validity) sees as hostility and threats toward Russia.
I think Putin knows we’re doing an excellent job of destroying ourselves, thanks, and that we can take care of it without any outside help.
