Senator Bernie Sanders was interviewed this morning by Jake Tapper on CNN this morning, and the subject was the Wikileaks that revealed the efforts by staff members of the Democratic National Committee to undermine his candidacy. Senator Sanders said he was not shocked; he has known for months that the DNC was not playing fair, and he once again called for the resignation of its chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Washerman Schultz must be held accountable, and it is only a matter of time–minutes, hours, or days–until she steps aside. If she should appear at the podium during the convention, she will get a hostile reception from the delegates. The DNC staff must support all Democratic candidates in primaries. It compromised its integrity during the primaries in this election.
Whoever takes her place should be committed to broadening the base of the party and reaching out to the supporters of Senator Sanders. Not as a gesture, but as a genuine program of remaking the Democratic party and restoring its progressive values. As Senator Sanders said in the interview, the focus for now must be on uniting to prevent the election of Donald Trump. Jake Tapper asked him about Tim Kaine, his colleague in the Senate. Sanders replied that Kaine is not as progressive as he (Sanders) is. But on Kaine’s “worst day,” he said, he is 100 times better than Donald Trump. Trump is already reaching out to disaffected Sanders voters, hoping to woo them and win them at the height of their rage and disappointment.
Bernie Sanders created a political earthquake, and it won’t go away. He raised the issues that had been brushed aside for years by a faux bipartisan consensus: about economic inequality, about further enrichment of the 1%, about the need to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure and produce good jobs by doing so, about disastrous trade deals that outsourced jobs and hurt working people, about making public college tuition-free for all students with the aspirations to go to college, and a host of other issues that go to the character of our country and our future. The movement he started will not disappear. He will use his energies, first, to defeat Donald Trump, and second, to build an organization to sustain the movement for a fair and just society that serves all people, not the 1%.
Bernie has won a place of honor in American history as a seer, a champion for causes that will survive and continue until they have won general acceptance and are no longer controversial.
If you believe in his ideals and goals, help him build his organization. Keep the momentum going.
Norman Thomas, the Socialist who ran for president six times, once wrote something that could be a description of Bernie’s contribution to political discourse:
“I am not the champion of lost causes, but the champion of causes not yet won.”

BEAUTIFUL!!!! I concur 100%. The battle is yet to be won but with Elizabeth Warren and Bernie in the Senate and the momentum with the Bernie supporters we will in time win. The young voters especially who have flocked to Bernie’s platform cannot be ignored even if the DNC has not seen that yet. To overlook them is to imperil their party as much or nearly as much as Trump is hurting the Republican party.

People are catching on. You can’t keep insulting those who don’t support Trump but also don’t believe Hillary. Whether or not they are Bernie supporters…the fear Donald rhetoric isn’t working anymore. DNC sabotaged themselves with or without the unproven Russian theory.

The fear-Donald-rhetoric is not propaganda. There is quite a lot to fear. With a Trump dominated Supreme Court and a Trump-dominated Congress and White House, Roe v. Wade will be rolled back; gay marriage will be rolled back; environmental regulation will be rolled back; gun control will be rolled back. The Russians will be free to overrun Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Our allies and enemies will be encouraged to develop their own nuclear weapons. Billions will be wasted building a wall across our southern border. Millions of people will be rounded up, held in detention camps, and deported. The First Amendment rights of journalists will be curbed. Women who dare to get an abortion will face punishment. What part of this scenario do you feel comfortable with?

Got it. Just don’t use it to deflect from legitimate concerns about Hillary and the DNC. We can handle both: Trump and Hillary. God help us all.

Neoliberal corporations and rich people run this country. That fact immediately changes any substantive discussion of one person making enough change to fundamentally alter our dire course. But in this narrow discussion, the laughable (and demoralizing) thing about your list ‘o’ fears is that Obama, with the strong leadership of killary, has already accomplished a lot of what you predict drumph might do.
He has deported millions and put who knows how many innocent immigrants in camps to be separated from their families and abused, sent refugees back to violent counties where they were guaranteed to be killed and tortured – countries our “foreign policy” ruined.
He has drilled, fracked, and supported nuclear energy and new nuclear weapons. He has drone bombed thousands and we are involved in at least five wars. Weapons deals and sales are off the charts.
Since Reagan (and this obviously includes every Dem and Repub. since), it has been getting harder for women to get an abortion.
The EPA has been gutted and has a permanent revolving door installed for all to see that they use to come and go to the corporations they “regulate.” Same goes for the SEC and every other regulating institution in this country.
I won’t even get into the fact that every single problem that caused the 2007/8 crisis is worse now than before.
The Democrats have not made a significant dent in gun control. Roll back? To what?
Ah yes, The Russians: the Russians, the Russians, the Russians are coming! Actually, killary and her neo-con buddies have been cheerleaders for sanctioning russia while carrying out a near encircling of Russia through NATO creating a dangerous situation that is not necessary in any way unless you are in a psychotic time warp, and stuck in 1958. The Russians have tried to make peace with us over and over since the end of WWII (that war we only won because of the russians). We have lied to them and snubbed them at every turn. I hate putin too, but we need to be honest about the past and the present.
Who encouraged other countries to build and has built the greatest number of nuclear power plants and weapons in the world? We’re number 1! Killary is all for it. She also has direct connections to arms sales as well – especially to our “allies” like the Saudis.
First amendment rights for journalists? You’ve got to be kidding right? Obama has the worst record for going after journalists (and whistle-blowers I might add), almost single-handedly stifling reporting and instilling fear in every serious investigative reporter that has to get information from government sources. I say almost single-handedly because killary supported all of it.
I could go on, but I will end with, excuse the pun, the thing that trumps almost everything, support for the TPP and TTIP. It gets at the heart of why the Dems stand a very good chance of losing. Killary supported it (and NAFTA before it), until she was forced by Bernie to say she opposed it. We know she will support it. The loathsome DNC would not even put language in its platform to oppose it, and I don’t remember a peep of protest from you know who.

Thanks for this post Diane. It shows why so many educators have worked hard in the Bernie Sanders campaign. Many of us have, for many months, been calling for Debbie W-S to be fired from her leadership role in the DNC. It is also why so many Dems have lost faith in the party, particularly we who are education professionals.
That being said, I will vote for Hillary….. but have not changed my mind about her devious behavior. But the alternative is just too dangerous to contemplate. I do respect my colleagues who still have NOT come to this conclusion and I do understand the angst we all carry based on past mendacious trickery imposed on us by Dem leadership including Hillary and Obama and Debbie.

Finally. Maybe Democrats will wake up before they lose this election to Trump. They are greatly underestimating voter anger and discontent over the status quo and the strong anti-establishment views in the electorate on both sides. Having two career politicians on the ticket with squishy support of young people, teachers, and labor is not going to help voter turnout. We need aggressive action on anti-union oligarchs, too big to fail businesses, and a focus on working Americans. Don’t blow this, Dems.

The Second Coming (by William Butler Yeats)
TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

In the political games, if opponents can read your political party’s OBVIOUS intention, your political party is done with the opponents’ set-up, accusation and make-believe IMPLANT EVIDENCES.
I respect all politicians whose backgrounds are clearly conscientious in their daily living and working with community.
Politicians, who only offer theoretical platform without SUBSTANTIAL experience in political field, are DEFINITELY GULLIBLE and easily manipulated by DEVIOUS political opponents. For instance, Southern Vietnamese commanders are gullible and trusted to international peace corp’s agreement. This gullibility yielded the loss of southern VN freedom to the northern VN communist.
Time produces money if time is used to work or to create second job, but not to play and to entertain.
Money buys time for convenience, but NEVER for contentment because self-less doing good deeds will bring us contentment.
In the same vein, “”theoretical”” idealists produce phenomenal idea for people to follow whether the phenomenal idea will destroy humanity or not. (see Hitler, Lenin, Mao, Ho)
Practical and experienced idealists/leaders never can convince people who are selfish, egoistic to do good deeds for humanity. (Saint Gandi, my idol Dr. Ravitch…)
In short, third party or green party LEADERS are GULLIBLE and IN-experienced. These leaders are under control and manipulation from INVISIBLE puppet master = global massive deceit network = follow the money
I hope that Senator Bernie will contribute and rectify the integrity in Democrat Party as he determines to be the hero in America history in 21st century.
Senator Bernie, you are the president in people’s heart. May God bless America so that you will forever be American people’s ideal politician whose idea will live and make a good impact in all young, future democrats. Back2basic

Bottom line, Bernie Sanders says vote for Hillary to defeat the far worse choice. Is Bernie a lemming, sell-out or corporate Dem? The one silver lining in all this miasma of treachery and buffoonery is that Bernie is still in the senate and maybe he has started a movement that will grow.

No question Wasserman Schultz should have been fired long ago, but I’m surprised to see the stoking of flames on this blog. The Bernie-or-Busters have plenty planned to disrupt the Democratic Convention rather than rallying behind the nominee–the only person to stand between us and a Putin-backed despot. They were never and never are going to support Hillary because they are more comfortable shouting from the streets than making tough decisions that require listening to different points of view and compromising.
Just look at the comments of Bernie delegates after they joined with Hillary delegates to craft unity amendments to the Party’s education platform. They have spent the week trashing the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton–even after making progress. They have no intention of unifying. So trying to include them in the Democratic Party is a fool’s errand.
I hope a third party is built, but that will take a lot longer than one election. In the meantime, Presidents Trump and Putin are planning their first summit.
Cue the haters.
