Lisa Rudley, the leader of the New York State Allies of Parents and Educators and a prominent proponent of Opt Outs, here presents to the Cuomo Commission to review the Common Core standards and tests. Lisa is a public school parent in Ossining, New York.
She explains the origins and flaws of the Common Core standards, and she explains the critique of them.
She also offers specific recommendations to improve education in the state.
She expresses the impact of the standards and high-stakes testing on children with disabilities and students who are new to English.
She demands a thorough review and changes in standards, assessment, curriculum, and teacher evaluation.
She says, “When you hurt teachers, you hurt kids. And when you hurt kids, parents get very angry.”
With leaders like Lisa and NYSAPE, parents are leading the way to a much better, far richer, quality of education than the one offered by the “reformers.”
But whoa! Hang on. Don’t turn it off when Lisa finishes. She is followed by the informed and eloquent Jamaal Bowman, principal of the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action. He has a series of clear and pragmatic recommendations on truly reforming the public schools.

I have a suggestion on how to improve public schools. Abolish the dept. Of ed and abolish for-profit charters And return full 100% power back to the states. While we are at it, make it illegal to hire someone who is not “highly qualified”. Why should a teacher have to have an advanced degree while the jackass running the show only has to know how to play basket ball?
I know it is untested and not scientificly valid but so is every reform tactic and agenda. Why not try mine?
/ seriously how much of a train wreck do you have to be to have presidental candidates promising to abolish your dept. because you @#&$$ed ( the $ sign was no accident) it up so bad that congress, parents, teachers, students and most people who make under a billion want your head on a platter? Ever heard of a national revolt started because of the dept.of interior or dept.of agriculture?

Wonderful. And loved the atmosphere.
Was it my imagination, or did the task force members look like they wanted to be anyplace else than where they were?

“And we are really angry”
Add my name to that list but with stronger language than really.

Lisa Rudley is from my district, and Lisa, if you are reading this, all I can say is THANK YOU for everything you think, do, and represent.
You are a shining beacon of truth and advocacy, and I put you up in the public education hall of fame along with Diane Ravitch, Carol Burris, Leonie Haimson, Mercedes Schneider, and Matt Farmer, just to name a few.
Keep up the excellent work, Lisa, and let this governor of ours have it, and have it hard. Your tenacity and those like you are the only language he understands because he is so morality disabled.
I am proud to call you a colleague.
