From a reader in Florida:
Most of the draconian gun laws in Florida were written by Marion Hammer former president of NRA, she remains a member of the board and longtime Florida lobbyist in Tallahassee. We need more town meetings to discuss bills being presented under innocuous sounding titles too misled us, such as the drafting of the Castle Doctrine, when Stand Your Ground is really the intended bill.
It appears that federal and state legislator and Governor Rick Scott would rather appease the National Rifle Association than protect our children from school massacres. The Valentine’s Day shooting in Broward County has left blood on their hands. Marco Rubio called Broward School Superintendent “Today is that day you pray never comes”. I find little compassion in his comment, knowing he has received $3,303,355. from the NRA to promote gun manufactures.
I wonder how this is going to play out for Rick Scott’s run for US Senate next year with an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association!

As a resident of the state, I hope I get the opportunity to vote for Gwen Graham. She has been very critical of Florida’s gun laws. She stated she will support banning assault rifles and will call for stricter background checks. She supports strong public schools, and we have a better chance with her than anyone the Republicans will present. http://orlando-rising.com/gwen-graham-rick-scott-address-ar-15s-legacy-will-forever-covered-blood/
In the midterm elections I hope Democrats will show up en masse to vote for better policy in the state. We need the recently arrived Puerto Ricans and other new residents to register to vote so they will be ready for the election. We need all registered voters that care about the future of the state to vote. No sleeping through the midterms!

retired teacher,

By the way, there are more reasons than Scott’s cozy relationship with the NRA to vote against Scott. I have never voted for Scott, and I never will. In addition to a reckless gun policy, Scott was involved in one of the largest Medicare scams in the country. I hope the people of Florida will continue to support Bill Nelson for senator. He may be older, but he is a far better man than Rick Scott. Nelson has supported gun control, and I assume he will continue to do so.http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/floridas-medicaid-fraudster-governor-rick-scott-criticizes-new-yorks-medicaid-spending-for-the-poor-9495749

Why anyone is surprised at the mass killings in this country is beyond me. This country is built on death and destruction, we are the leading purveyors of death machines by far in the world. We glorify the Department of War, the US military in a fashion such that if one questions the whole patriotic flag, anthem and other bullshit, one is thought to be insane. This country is a death machine, plain and simple.
Go ahead, deny it, fool yourselves, Oh, we’re the greatest country in the world, the shining city on the hill. HORSE MANURE. Until this country comes to grips with its love affair with everything military and death machine related, you can count on these mass killings to keep occurring.

Where did the NRA get the millions it donated to the Trump campaign? Hard telling. But CNBC reports that the FBI is investigating possible laundering of Russian money by the NRA. This could be big:

I’m not a big fan of the Center for American Progress, but if they can get Congress to look into this, more power to them.

Correction. The link is to an op-ed piece, not a CNBC news report.

Until our nation begins publicly-financing our political campaigns, politicians will have pander to groups and individuals that put up the money for their campaigns. There are many people on the left and the right, who are in favor of banning all political contributions, and having the people pay the costs for campaigns.
Until this happens (FAT CHANCE) politicians are going to be groveling to groups like the NRA (and other pro-firearms rights organizations).
Until this happens, all donations must be publicly disclosed, and every penny broadcast to the public on the internet, and by watchdog groups like the Federal Election Commission.
Citizens must be alert to which politician is receiving whose money! And then vote accordingly.
