I know this may seem like small potatoes after the devastating loss in Los Angeles. But it is good news. Two strong supporters of public schools were elected to the school board in Ossining, New York. One is Lisa Rudley, a co-founder of New York State Allies for Public Education, and a leader of the successful Opt Out movement. Her running mate was Diana Lemon, a local civic leader. Both are parents of children in the district schools.
Lisa describes who they are in this letter to the editor, written before the election.
Step by step, district by district, we will take our country back from those who would destroy our public institutions and treat our children as data points.

Lisa Rudley is a great advocate and organizer on behalf of children and public education. She speaks truth to power and is a leading force in New York State in letting politicians know that parents will not be fooled, ignored or suppressed in exercising their sacred right to act in the best interests of their children.

This is how school board elections are supposed to be. Local residents running on a platform to determine how their schools will be run. It shouldn’t be about outside money trying to skew the results to reflect the interests of outside money.

The reason you can win in Ossining has a lot to do with voter participation. I would bet that it was much higher in a small district in NY vs the huge LA district. Jefferson may have had a vision about this.

LA has over a million undocumented people living in it, and I have no idea about the number of legal immigrants. Even though these people are stakeholders in the schools, they have no voice. This makes LA vulnerable to takeover by outside interests. Also, poor people that can vote generally have lower voter turnout. When you add wealthy outside interests that run a negative campaign, you can understand the outcome better. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-illegal-immigration-los-angeles-20170208-story.html
