The state of Pennsylvania, the School Reform Commission, Governor Corbett, and the Legislature have decided to strip bare the publuc schools of Philadelphia. They are doing to these students what they would never do to their own. They are vandals.
This morning, i received this poem written by a student, Siduri Beckmann. Why is Siduri less deserving of a full education than the children of the city and state’s leaders?
“This poem has brought tears to many eyes in Philadelphia in the last twenty-four hours!
“Siduri Beckman is a ninth-grader at Julia R. Masterman School. She is the city of Philadelphia’s first Youth Poet Laureate. She “felt like it was part of my job and my duty as a Masterman student to write a poem protesting the school budget cuts.”
A Word from the Cripples
I’ve got something
to say.
It won’t take long
Just as long as it took you
to snatch everything away
One fourth of the body is
the leg
You have crippled us
Cursing us to hobble
all of our lives.
I cannot run
cross-country
on just
one leg.
Rip song
off of our tongues
to find songs are not Velcro but flesh
Snap the bows of the violins
in case the students could ever get the idea
that music
is alive
Because then you would have blood on your hands.
God forbid.
You see us as a problem
the classic class problem
INNER CITY streaked like mud across our faces
they’re all on the street anyway.
But leeches don’t suck out the disease
just the lifeblood.
I am angry
But I will not stoop
and hurt you
As you have hurt me
Thrusting fear
into our hearts
Why make us feel
so small
helpless
Forgotten by the people
whose duty it is to remember
Turn your back on your city
that chose not to choose
you
Because they feared
and now do all fears dawn true.
Bust the beehive
We will come out
In droves of wasps
We sting and live
to sting again
We will show ourselves to be
as formidable a foe
as all of those frackers
who you refuse to tax.
But you have also forgot
all of those ink marks slashed
with no faces or hopes or dreams or blood or flesh
Dismiss us
We cannot vote.
But in this country
we can speak.

Who deserves such astonishing children as Siduri Beckman, the 9th grade poet laureate in Philadelphia, city of loveless bogus reformers and privatizing “public officials” who trash the schools these kids need? Children belong to those who love and nurture them, so read Siduri’s poem every day to remember who we’re fighting for, we grownups opposing the cruel corporate rampage.

Reblogged this on Crazy Crawfish's Blog and commented:
Just as in Hunger Games, we make our children fight our battles for us because too many of us are too apathetic and cowardly to confront the realities hidden beneath a thin veneer of comforting Reformer lies. We watch mass school closings in Chicago and forced relocation programs with casual disinterest. As long as our children escaped this year’s Reaping we can comfortably watch the battles from afar, like a staged reality TV show we can simply change the channel on when it gets to “real” or uncomfortable to watch.

When I walk around our school and see all the artwork, listen to the band or choir, see the other works of the students I am continually amazed at what a young person (high school) can do. So much talent coming out. I’m fortunate that we have not had the budget cut insanities to which many other districts have been subjected (I know G. Buzzeti that many times these are manufactured budget crises for nefarious purposes.) And we only spend about $8,000 per student in a rural poverty district. I’m just worried that now with the total increased emphasis on test scores that we will begin to jettison some of the most excellent aspects of our schools here. Is that why we have a new superintendent? I hope not as he attended our schools and hopefully has a good feel for what the community sees, rightly so, as wise spending on non-tested subjects.

This tears my heart, boils my blood, sends rage through my veins, and fills me with determination to fight the powerful masters of greed and corruption – the puppets of plutocrats. The corruption that disguises itself as legislation and government is abusing children. Who can merely stand by as children are abused?
We must organize, unite and stop those who cripple our children. One way is to begin the legal processes of “recall” of elected officials for the specific reason of “not serving the best interests of his/her constituents.”
Thank you for posting this.
Siduri deserves a special thanks for using her gift to open the eyes, hearts and minds of those who read what is so eloquently stated.

Wow, she gets my vote. This is what I am talking about. This is art. Art helps you to think properly. I have more top youth in California at George1la when CORE-CA was at Fresno for CREATE-CA to re install arts in California schools. This young girl and many like her were allowed to express themselves and look at the outcome. This is not “Common Core” stuff this is education of the complete person. Arts works in prisons, youth authority and in pre-K-12.
Boeing’s representative said that art should start when born. We agree. Colors are art. Language is art. Beauty is art. And it is many other things also and not always pleasant but of our society. It is a reflection. This young poet is going somewhere. This should just be the beginning of more availability for all. The rewards in all sectors of society are large. Much larger than the small investment and in business that is supposed to be a good deal for the corporatist’s.

This should be nailed to the door of the school district in Philadelphia and in every district where they are robbing kids of good public schools.

GREAT IDEA!!!!!!! A great poem has universal message and appeal.
This poem could be as relevant in London as in Philadelphis. The movement of Urban Shrinkage and displacing populations is happening and has happened worldwide (Germany was proficient at it…go to internet….that is the plaln this country has embraced). This very talented child has tapped into the very heart of what is happening. U-Tube is a great idea!! But the time is now!!

This is Siduri’s mum here: we’ll film her reading the poem and get it up on YouTube asap, and will post the link when it’s up. It’s so great that people are reading and responding. Here is an action toolkit for anyone in the Philadelphia School District who is interested in responding directly: http://parentsunitedphila.com/2013/05/28/new-action-toolkit-on-school-budget-crisis/.
