A reader who is a veteran teacher suggests incorporating the Mayan calendar into VAM evaluations.
It could be one of the multiple measures that everyone talks about and would very likely improve the overall accuracy of the VAM ratings.

Yes and how about astrological signs as well…teacher’s signs could be used as part of their evaluation. What is really sad about all this is that the answers are right in front of us.
Students beginning in the 4th grade must keep a running portfolio of their work I still have some of my work from high school and it helps me figure out how I arrived at a conclusion. Improvement in certain skills should be measured- such as writing, ability to use technology in projects, etc. Some of my high school students do not know how to attach a file!! How can that be? It’s because the focus is on a 19th century testing system that values either a) obsolete knowledge or b) knowledge that can be easily accessed that was not available decades ago.
The proper teaching of writing has been deemphasized because most of the standardized tests don’t require it and the one that does- the CAHSEE has such low standards students can score a 2 out of 4 on the writing portion and still pass the test if they score high enough in the multiple choice test section. Enough!

Well, Mr. and Mrs. Reagan did consult with astrologers. VAM is indeed VODOO. But so is the new Social Security formula being proposed by Obama. Everything is normal—lunacy abounds

Yes, VAM should go the way of the Mayan calendar and also come to a non-eventful end.

Sorry, somehow “uneventful” got transformed to “non-eventful.”
