In the fog of the pandemic, it’s hard to keep track of school closings and cancellation of state testing.
In Kansas, Governor Laura Kelly ordered closure of school buildings but schooling will
continue.
CLARIFICATION: Governor Kelly didn’t cancel school for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. She closed school buildings. Schools will be working to implement Continuous Learning plans for all students.

I know we are worried about EdTech taking advantage of this “opportunity” in the same way New Orleans was co-opted by the charter school movement after Katrina.
In Florida, the Florida Virtual School offered traditional public school teachers training for its systems. My local union and apparently the Florida association as well asked its members NOT to take the course but to use the district’s resources for digital learning so as to not lose students to FLVS.

But there’s something I’m seeing on social media that may work in teachers’ favor in the long term. Parents who are all of a sudden homeschooling their kids are showing a LOT of appreciation for what teachers do for a living.
Here’s a story about a celebrity’s comment:

If parents are struggling with their own 2.5 kids, imagine a room of 20 of other people’s kids. Different home values, different home resource levels, different religions, different language backgrounds, different physical and/or mental abilities and/or disabilities, different skill levels, etc. It’s not as easy as people think. Of course, I love teaching my students despite the struggles, and I am disappointed that this virus will keep them out of the school buildings until at least April 15 if not the rest of the school year.
When this COVD-19 thing is over, could we see a wave of newfound, vocal support for public school teachers?
