Stuart Egan read Baker Mitchell’s op-ed in the Wall Street Journal defending charters against critics who say they foster segregation, and he was flabbergasted.
He includes Baker Mitchell’s Wall Street Journal article, fulminating against the critics.
Then he cites the ProPublica article, Lindsay Wagner’s reporting, and John Merrow’s commentary, all reinforcing that Baker Mitchell has made millions by operating four charter schools.
Then Stuart goes to the official North Carolina report card site to gather information about Baker Mitchell’s charters.
Three are overwhelmingly white; one is overwhelmingly black. In other words, this champion of charters, this man who told the world that charters do not promote segregation, is managing a charter chain that is highly segregated. Furthermore, contrary to what he claimed in his article, his schools do NOT outperform local public schools.
Baker Mitchell prevaricated Bigly.
Someone should tell the Wall Street Journal to do their own fact-checking.
Sorry, totally off-topic, but ding-dong the witch is dead – David Koch: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/23/us/david-koch-dead.html
Now, now, I know I shouldn’t celebrate. Everyone makes the world a better place.
Some by being in it, some by leaving it.
I just read that news, too. Unfortunately, I think David was a tiny bit better than Charles and perhaps had a tiny check on his power just by living. I sure hope Charles does not inherit most of the money to make him even more powerful. Very scary times.
I know this sounds terrible, but “1 down, 1 to go”. Unfortunately, this is only a small portion of the 1%ers. Reading the comment sections of the various news outlets reporting this……..they are NOT a very well liked family/business entity.
Charles admitted in an interview to 3 credible threats against his life. That was years before the recently published book, Kochland. So, we can assume his family members, if not Charles, live in fear.
truly sad that the man’s tombstone could read just that: One down, one to go. All that endless interfering and controlling and demanding and hoarding, and yet when he dies the larger society only says good riddance and then sits back and waits for the next brother to “go.”
Reblogged this on caffeinated rage and commented:
Thanks to Dr. Ravitch.
And thanks to you, Stuart, for covering the truth, a territory the WSJ avoids.
Segregation is never a good idea for poor, minority students. They benefit tremendously from attending integrated schools.
We should not be surprised when amateur operators establish schools that support racial separation. These private operators like Mitchell are ‘masters of their own universe.’ The fact that they are using public money to enhance segregation should be illegal. Unless we have better laws and regulations that limit what private contractors can do, we will continue to use public money to segregate students.
True, retired teacher.
The whole purpose of charters and voucher is to continue Jim Crow and make $$$$$ off the backs of others. .
I remember when Murdoch the Morlock first bought the Wall Street Journal of Corporate Apologetics, there was a LOT of controversy about whether it would remain the American business newspaper of record or became another Not-so-Breitbart or Faux News. Well, that question has been definitively answered. The WSJ-CA has been running daily articles about how all the Democrats are a bunch of scary Socialists and Socialism is Stalinism and why Trump policies really aren’t all that bad, really, if you squint at them. It’s become another extreme right-wing rag. The Daily Stormer with stock quotes.
Bob,
Yes … ” It’s become another extreme right-wing rag.”
This country was founded off the BACKS of black and brown people.
Genocide, slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, eugenics, immigration restrictions that were praised by Hitler as a “model for the world,” redlining and segregation and voter suppression, the world’s highest per capita penal population (mostly of black and brown people), and now the racist in chief. Quite a history.
Murdoch and the Koch’s are one and the same. The Stalin schtick is right out of the Koch playbook. Charles and David’s dad, Fred, made money off of the misery of the Russian people during Stalin’s reign.
The family learned how to imprison populations. The Koch’s ALEC led the U.S. to its position as the most incarcerated population in the world. The Koch agenda led to the U.S. having an infant mortality rate that rivals the 3rd world and the economic and health precariousness of a banana republic.
