Dana Milbank spots a NATIONAL EMERGENCY!
I hope this is not behind a paywall. Then you could see the picture of the Honduran baby in diapers, brushing his teeth, and the video of the “caravan.” In a few weeks, that baby will be separated from his parents and put into a cage.
Milbank begins:
This is an emergency!
A caravan of unarmed, destitute people, many of them women and children, is snaking its way through Mexico toward the United States at the breakneck pace of about three miles per hour. Still 1,000 miles from America, the ill-nourished pedestrians travel as a pack for protection against gangs; the few who make it to the border, perhaps next month, will likely apply, legally, for asylum.
But the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth is in a panic.
“Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan,” President Trump tweets. Without evidence, he adds: “Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy.”
Yes, a national emergy! So urgent Trump doesn’t have time to add three letters to make it “emergency”! This is bad. Unpresidented, even. Covfefe!
Trump, again without evidence (or, in this case, logic), says Democrats arranged the caravan (from their little-known party headquarters in Honduras, presumably) but have now decided their brainchild was a “big mistake.” Trump accuses the bedraggled migrants of “an assault on our country” and says the group contains “some very bad people.”
The genius in Trump’s pre-election emergency: The asylum seekers, if they reach the border at all, won’t arrive until after the election. Therefore, he can frighten everybody about the menace they pose, and voters will be none the wiser.
The flaw in Trump’s pre-election emergency: Others can play this game. Using the same evidentiary standard Trump has used — none — I have identified various factual explanations for why the caravan spooks the president enough to declare a national emergency. The migrants in the caravan:
●Have his tax returns and are planning to release them.
●Are members of Nikki Haley’s presidential exploratory committee.
●Have the Russian kompromat on Trump.
●Are Russian colluders coming to turn themselves in to Robert Mueller.
●Are climate-change scientists.
●Have the n-word tape Omarosa claims to have heard.
●Are Simon & Schuster employees carrying a reprinting of Bob Woodward’s “Fear.”
●Are deported mothers coming to reclaim the detained children Trump lost.
●Are accountants coming to put Trump’s businesses into a blind trust.
●Are Saudi bankers coming to demand Trump repay their loans.
●Are vendors and business partners stiffed by Trump.
●Are Trump University alumni demanding their money back.
●Are hedge-fund managers coming to thank Trump for protecting their carried-interest loophole.
●Are threatening to release Brett Kavanaugh’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit calendars.
●Are all clients of Michael Avenatti.
As Trump likes to say: We’ll see what happens!
Alternatively, and again using Trump’s standard of proof (“I think the Democrats had something to do with it”), it would be 100-percent accurate to say Trump is the one who thought up and financed the caravan, for the purpose of fabricating a wedge issue two weeks before the midterms. It would be similarly accurate to conclude that the caravan, when it arrives, will be loaded, like the old Wells Fargo wagon, with good things for Trump.
Maybe the caravan will finally deliver on all those unmet promises that have so far eluded Trump and substantiate his unsupported claims:
●Tax cuts for the middle class.
● “Beautiful” and cheap health insurance for everybody.
●The benefits of Trump’s trade war.
●Lower prices for prescription drugs.
●A $1 trillion infrastructure package.
●The FBI “spy” who infiltrated Trump’s campaign
●The payments from George Soros for protesters.
●All the money and jobs promised from Saudi weapons deals.
●His missing contributions pledged to charities.
●The guy who impersonated Trump’s voice on the “Access Hollywood” tape.
●President Barack Obama’s instructions to tap Trump’s phones.
●All those coal mining jobs that are coming back.
Maybe the migrants are those 3,000 Puerto Ricans whose hurricane deaths the Democrats faked. Or they are coming to build a border wall. Or they are Mexican bankers coming to pay for it. Or they are carrying Trump’s promised ethics rules on their backs. Maybe they will bring proof, finally, that Antonin Scalia was murdered and Obama was born in Kenya.
The only limit is Trump’s imagination — which is prodigious.
“We’re going to be putting in a 10 percent tax cut for middle-income families,” Trump claimed Monday, as he has repeatedly the last few days. “It’s going to be put in next week.”
Huh? A tax cut? Next week? Even Trump allies were baffled. Congress isn’t in session until after the election. How is he going to make good on this bluff?
It’s a national emergy! Quick, load a tax cut onto the caravan!
i just looked at a recent Facebook post from a local right wing Christian. He maintains that the caravan is a Democratic plot so that our country would be forced to open its borders. I have never heard a Democrat supporting open borders. This makes no sense, but consider the source.
I am not a fan of conspiracies. But if I were, I would think that the caravan is a more likely conservative ploy to inspire xenophobes to show up to vote for Republicans and justify the expense of building the stupid wall.
If he truly is Christian and not xtian, he should welcome all immigrants. The Bible has plenty to say about how to treat the stranger in your land, for you were once strangers yourself.
The blatant hypocrisy totally seems to escape them.
Makes me sick. May KARMA prevail.
Heavens to Betsy! Hide your valuables and crawl under the bed!.
Is Betsy’s last name Murgatroyd?
Trump and the GOP are using this caravan story as red meat to the haters, xenophobes, bigots and chauvinists to get them to vote GOP in the coming election on Nov. 6. It’s despicable, it’s just a ploy to deflect and mislead.
I’m waiting for the guys at South Park to come up with a mashup episode of this and the movie Speed. “They’re moving at three miles an hour, guys. Time to get the heavy artillery.”
I needed a smile after all that is happening this week. What a putz.
Yep, those poor starving women and children who are a thousand miles away definitely are a threat to our well-being. How sad that people don’t connect the dots and see that this is strictly a political move. Trump blames the media and the Democrats for playing games. He is the biggest conman, manipulator the US has ever seen. Remember in Trumpland, “Truth is not truth.”
This is a plea for money but I thought it expressed what is the reality of the people who have left their homes.

Dear Carol,
I write from Honduras, where stories of the Migrant Caravan are viscerally real. I’m working with brave men and women who are fighting for decent wages and basic rights for the farm workers who produce goods destined for U.S. supermarket shelves. It’s incredibly frustrating when I hear the media asking why these asylum seekers are coming to the United States, but not questioning the root causes of the poverty and violence they flee.
Yet poverty is not an accident or an abstract concept. It is born and fomented by a global economy that regularly churns out poverty wages and inhumane working conditions – robbing workers and their families of their health, vitality, and livelihoods.
Please support our campaigns for economic justice in Honduras. Help us raise awareness about how U.S. corporations are complicit in the poverty and violence pushing that Caravan north.
Honduran workers who organize often face threats, firings, physical violence – and even murder. The AFL-CIO reports 31 trade unionists have been killed here since 2009. And ILRF regularly issues urgent actions to call attention to workers under threat.
What’s even more infuriating is that this violence – which is fueling the Migrant Caravan – is often deployed by the very employers, who service U.S. consumers, brands, and retailers.
That’s why we support the courageous men and women of STAS – the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Agroindustria y Similares – a Honduran trade union representing over 900 agricultural workers in the banana, sugarcane, palm oil, and melon industries. Most of these workers are harvesting food that ends up on U.S. supermarket shelves. STAS organizers take action every day to make life better for Honduran workers and their families. I am standing with them to support their fight.
Hondurans have a right to seek asylum, but they also have a right to stay in their communities and to have safe and dignified working conditions where they live. Please help us bring these stories home to raise awareness and challenge brands’ and retailers’ complicity. Will you stand with us by making a donation today?
Thank you for all your support.
In solidarity,

U.S. will deploy 5,200 additional troops to the Mexican border, officials say, more than tripling the military presence there
The development comes as several thousand Central American migrants make their way through Mexico toward the United States. Though they remain hundreds of miles from the border, President Trump suggested in a tweet Monday that the mass of people represents an “invasion” of the United States, warning them “our Military is waiting for you!”
This is his campaign theme: close the borders!
The bombs and the massacre distracted from it for him
Jordan has a camp of 86,000 for Muslim refugees that has existed for a number of years. The Rohingya Muslims immigrants number around 650,000 and are in Bangladesh. When people who have been starved and persecuted by US actions leave their country they are met here by an armed militia. It is legal to apply for asylum. Guess those mothers and children really are a threat. They will be in full fighting mode after walking for at least a thousand miles with not much to eat. [Oh, I forget the L is paying them to come so they can vote illegally for Democrats.] Trump is vile and he is supported by a GOP Congress that has no morals. Who is speaking up for these struggling people? Nobody would walk this far, and many won’t get here, unless conditions in their home country is beyond life threatening. These people are just as bad as ISIS in Iraq and Syria since the same number of soldiers is being used. Great government!!!!!! Doesn’t this make you proud to be an American? It makes me want to kneel when I hear the national anthem. This is a VERY sick political ploy.

U.S. military will have a force up to 14,000 troops, many armed, ready to tackle migrant caravan at the Mexico border
BY JAMES LAPORTA AND TOM O’CONNOR ON 10/29/18 AT 5:58 PM
The U.S. military will have an actual force of up to 14,000 ready to intervene at the southern border with Mexico, including an additional 7,000 planned deployment in reserves on round-the-clock standby.
The Pentagon announced Monday that it will send up to 5,200 troops to the border ahead of the anticipated arrival of a caravan of Central American migrants that President Donald Trump has warned would not be able to enter the country. These troops, which “are in fact deploying with weapons” will join up to 2,000 National Guards already at the border for a combined force of about 7,200—or about the same amount of U.S. soldiers involved in the battle against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria.
In addition, a U.S. Defense Department official with knowledge of the deployment—known officially as Operation Faithful Patriot—told Newsweek that “the units deployed right now are of actual strength between 5,000 and 7,000. With another 7,000 on standby on 24-hour notice.”…
Defense Secretary James Mattis and combatant commanders have authorized U.S. troops heading to the border to carry live ammunition, according to the documents obtained by Newsweek….

All of this about the caravan is poppycock and red meat for Trump’s base.
These immigrants are 1,000 miles away from our border, and they are walking.
They will ask for legal asylum. He, of course, wants to whip up a crisis so that his base will see an “invasion” by brown-skinned people.
This was supposed to be the week of the caravan and Kavanaugh, the two issues that would bring the base to the polls. Instead the orchestration of the issues was disrupted by the bombs and the massacre.
This morning, Trump again attacked the free press as “the true enemy of the people.”
Pence held a rally in Michigan tonight and invited a Jews-for-Jesus “rabbi” to speak about the synagogue massacre.
Jews for Jesus are converts and evangelicals who try to convert other Jews.
To say the least, it is deeply offensive to observant Jews and even a secular Jew like me to invite a convert to speak instead of a real rabbi.
On Twitter, the speculation is that no real rabbi would speak at Pence’s event.
A friend reminded me that Pence and DeVos are praying for the day that America is an all-Christian nation.
So much for interfaith harmony and understanding.
Money should be no problem since the tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations will pay for it all.

Migrant caravan troop deployment could cost $50 million despite no evidence of terrorists, major gang presence
BY JAMES LAPORTA AND CHANTAL DA SILVA ON 10/31/18 AT 10:39 AM
The Trump administration is preparing for the most dangerous, and unlikely, scenario as it sends thousands of troops to the border to intercept a carvavan of Central American migrants making its way through Mexico at the cost of tens of millions of dollars.
Documents obtained by Newsweek from two Defense Department officials show that intelligence officials do not anticipate any terrorist infiltration and only limited involvement of criminal gangs as the caravan follows its projected route.
On Monday, the Pentagon announced that it was sending an additional 5,200 troops to the United States’s southern border amid increasingly heated rhetoric from President Donald Trump, including claims of the presence of “unknown Middle Easterners,” terrorists and MS-13 gang members. Those claims are not currently supported by intelligence on the ground…
Director for Defense Oversight at research and advocacy group the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) Adam Isacson has warned that costs for the deployment could cost as much as a million dollars per day.

Trump is expert about everything. I’m willing to bet he never read the Constitution. He doesn’t know that he can’t rewrite it with an e ecutive order. He is very dumb and a menace to the world. Brazil just elected a Trumpist who loves torture, plans to develop the zamazon, hates gays, and sees women as a toy for his pleasure.
Diane, here are two of my favorite Trump quotes. He definitely has a lot of class.
“You know, it really doesn’t matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.”
—Donald Trump
“Women: You have to treat them like s**t.” “A person who is very flat chested is very hard to be a 10.”
—Donald Trump
President Trump has described the caravan as an “invasion of our country,” and Fox News referred to it as an invasion more than 60 times in October, along with 75 times on Fox Business Network, according to CNN.
Will the 15,000 troops on the border gun down the women and children?
This is horrible. The Nigerian army used Trump’s Tweet as justification to kill 45 protestors that were unarmed. To Trump a stone is a rifle and immigrants should be killed with a military rifle. Who says Trump doesn’t encourage murder? He is a bigoted, ignorant, disgusting, vile scourge of a person.
…………………
The Nigerian army on Friday used President Trump’s Thursday declaration that rocks thrown by migrants should be considered rifles to justify the slaughter of 45 protesters that human-rights advocates claim were unarmed, according to BuzzFeed News. The official Twitter account of the Nigerian army tweeted the video of Trump’s speech—in which he says that “If they want to throw rocks at our military […] I told them, consider it a rifle”—along with the caption: “Please Watch and Make your Deductions.” The tweet comes just days after the army shot and killed 45 Muslim protesters in the capital city of Abuja.

…Trump: “I will tell you, anybody throwing stones, rocks, like they did to Mexico and the Mexican military, Mexican police, where they badly hurt police and soldiers of Mexico, we will consider that a firearm. They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back. We’ll consider — and I told them — consider it a rifle. When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico military and police, I say consider it a rifle.”
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a rock is a good guy with an M4 carbine. There are already reports that paramilitaries are gathering down at the border in anticipation of a turkey shoot. I suspect fire control will not be a priority. I suspect the president* doesn’t care. He’s rooting for a bloodbath.

A politically motivated waste of money—Pentagon sources on Trump’s surprise border mission
BY JAMES LAPORTA, NICOLE GOODKIND AND CHANTAL DA SILVA ON 11/2/18 AT 7:25 AM
…Speaking to Newsweek on condition of anonymity, as they are not authorized to speak to the media, U.S. military sources said senior leaders within the Pentagon had derided the deployment not only as a significant waste of taxpayer dollars but as running counter to military readiness, while a minority lauded the Trump administration’s hardline crackdown on immigration.
What the majority of service members within the higher echelon seemed to agree on was that the decision to deploy thousands of troops to the border was a politically motivated tactic, with the Trump administration ordering the deployment less than a week before the November 6 midterm elections, sources suggested.
“If Ray Charles was deaf he could still tell you that this is just an election stunt,” one source told Newsweek. “There is no practical or tactical reason for this to happen.”

Americans Would Feel Safer If a Huge Caravan of Angry White Men Left the Country
By Andy Borowitz, The New Yorker
02 November 18
[The article below is satire. Andy Borowitz is an American comedian and New York Times-bestselling author who satirizes the news for his column, “The Borowitz Report.”]
A vast majority of Americans would feel significantly safer if an enormous caravan consisting of angry white men left the country, a new poll indicates.
The poll, conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, suggests that the concept of an angry-white-male caravan could be the most wildly popular policy proposal in the run-up to Tuesday’s midterm elections.
In an indication of just how much support the proposal has, many Americans said that they would personally contribute gas money to help get the caravan on its way.
Despite the popularity of the caravan, however, there was disagreement over what the optimal number of angry white men to depart with it would be, with some suggesting a figure of twenty thousand and others preferring a number as high as forty million.
Additionally, the implementation of such a caravan could face major obstacles; the survey indicates that both Mexican and Canadian voters overwhelmingly oppose any influx whatsoever of angry white American males.
Audio: From Mexico, the Reality of the Migrant Caravan
A caravan of mostly Honduran migrants is making a dangerous trek through Mexico, toward the U.S. border. Our reporter spent a week with the people who make up the caravan and found that the vitriolic rhetoric from the American right is the least of their concerns. A group of progressive women in Texas has organized secretly, to avoid retaliation by neighbors and friends.

How sad that these people are treated as criminals/animals by Trump. Nobody would risk traveling by foot without decent water and food, and perhaps with children, unless they were totally desperate to survive. I can’t imagine the hardships they are enduring. Trump is a con man and an opportunist who uses these poor people for political gain.

As the immigration debate rages, they quietly count on the dead and memorializes them with quilts
by DRBYOS OCTOBER 31, 2018
…The enormous migrant caravan or people currently walking to the US-Mexico border, some with baby strollers, has added fuel to the country’s raging immigration debate as President Trump called it “invasion” of Central Americans, and he is sending US troops and razor wire to the border.
But for Jody Ipsen, an American woman who lives near the border, the immigration issue is much more quiet and bleak. For more than a decade, Ipsen has been keeping track of how many people on their journey to the United States, and they have them in quilts, then the quilts around the country.
“It’s an emotionally charged project – I feel like I’ve been living in grief for the past 11 years,” Ipsen said. “Still, it’s so important to humanize these people.”
Ipsen learns the names of the Pima County medical examiner. When their names are not known, they and other volunteer quilters stitch “desconocido,” Spanish for unknown – or in the most heartbreaking patchwork, “baby” for an unknown infant who has died.
The quilts are filled with the names of the 3,200 bodies that have been found since 2000 along the 262-mile stretch of Arizona desert on the US-Mexico border called the Tucson Sector.
…She said that Illinois employee Jamie Pasillas, who was sent back to Mexico when his visa expired in 2012. After his renewal application was turned down, she said, he decided to walk across the US. border with a group led by a coyote, but he became injured and fell behind. He ultimately died just a few miles from the country he had adopted as his own years before.
When the Migrant Quilt Project display came to Waukegan, Ill., This year, one of the viewers in attendance was Pasillas’s cousin, who was surprised and grateful to find his relative’s name artfully stitched on a blue quilt covered with small skulls.
“He thanked us for humanizing his loved one,” Ipsen said. “That’s why we’re doing this – to express the lives of those who would otherwise be nameless.”…
