Tim Slekar and Shaun Johnson are fearless education activists who operate on many fronts to support public education. They write, they blog, they make videos, they spoof the loony ideas called “reform.”
On March 11, Anthony Cody and I were interviewed @TheChalkface about the new Network for Public Education. We described how we hope to provide a means for grassroots groups to get connected to one another; to supply them with information and research on important issues; and to let them know that they are not alone. We will oppose the misuse of testing to punish or reward teachers, and to close schools.
When we clear away all legal issues, we hope to be able to endorse candidates and to let voters in state and local elections know which candidates truly care about strengthening their public schools. We even intend to have a Seal of Approval for our allies.

I listened and it was great. I’m excited to become an activist for The Network of Public Education!!

It was a powerful interview, replete with may comprehensible examples of how the reform movement preys upon low income students and their families.
But there is hope, and it lies in each of us, in all of us collectively, and in NPE.
I encourage everyone to join.

Excellent idea! There has always been strength in numbers, and there is no better time to initiate a “tactical survival” technique such as this to counter the predators that are seeking to destroy public education. The campaign to privatize schools and to dismantle the teaching profession is in full swing. We need a concentration of leadership figures to stand up to it. This movement will need all hands on deck to match the forces of the well-established (and well-funded) reform-minded organizations. The time is now to band together and work as a unified front.
