I would be thrilled to see regime change in Tehran. I have vivid memories of the 1979 Revolution. People on the left in the West cheered the fall of the Shah, who had modernized Iran but who was widely understood to be brutal towards critics.
Since 1979, we have seen the calcification of a religious regime that never holds elections, rules by force, permits no dissent, murders its critics, grants no rights to women, and subsidizes terrorism.
When Iranian students and dissidents rose up against the regime a few weeks ago, their resistance was crushed, and at least 30,000 people were murdered by the regime.
I should be cheering Trump’s decision to attack Iran, but I have a deep sense of foreboding.
Trump says “the people” should take control, but how exactly will that work? The military has weapons, not the people.
It appears that there is no plan for what happens next.
If the regime has the weapons and the Iranian people do not, the outcome will be preservation of the status quo.
It also matters that Trump went to war without Congressional authorization. Either the law is the law, or it is not. Of course, the military would lose the element of surprise, but the law is the law. If the law hampers military action, change it.

It also matters that many innocent people–including children–will be killed. OMG, will it never cease?! WE created the UN. Why don’t we use it? Or the World Court. I share your concerns, and I also have Iranian friends–with relatives in Iran. I have also a dear friend in Israel. Please people…let’s work for peace everywhere. Remember Dr. ML King’s words: “The bombs we drop abroad, explode at home…”

Many innocent people have already been killed. One of the first targets was a girls elementary school. 40 dead. We’re learning from Israel.
So the U.S. should get kicked out of the World Cup and other events, right? That’s how it’s supposed to work when one country attacks another, right?

Yes, in my opinion, the U.S. should be ineligible for the World Cup (playing in it as well as hosting it), the Olympics (ditto), and much more.

He is trying to show that he is the bully. Some say he will want Iran’s oil – though that is what they said of Bush when he yelled WMD.
He is trying to changing the main subject which is Epstein.

Diane, I found Prof. Jeffrey Sachs’ take enlightening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8exVWx3inpU

The most important point Prof. Sachs makes is that Trump tore up the Iran nuclear agreement in his first term. Iran had agreed not to develop a nuclear weapon and to accept regular outside monitoring.
Trump had to pull out of that agreement because it was negotiated by Obama.

Just like it47 talked GOP lawmakers into rejecting a bill which would have alleviated the border/immigration problems since it might’ve actually solved problems before it got into office (during the Biden Admin.), & that just wouldn’t do. No, instead, there’s ICE, death, inhumane warehousing of people & forced/coerced deportation.

47 also demanded that Congress reject a bill that would prevent midair crashes by installing a warning system. I have heard any justification but probably someone is getting money.

Unilateral action always begets unilateral action. This has no end.

Not-so-good morning to you, Diane. My reaction to this illegal, duplicitous, and utterly unjustifiable “Will we never learn?” act of war ordered by the deranged chairperson of the Board of Peace is rather less measured and temperate than yours. It begins: The International Criminal Court should issue its first arrest warrant for T***p and its second for Netanyahoo.

This attack may be the first official action of Trump’ Board of Peace.
Will it facilitate his campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize?

Congress needs to take back it’s war powers from the executive branch.

This is an illegal war. Plain and simple. This is totally impeachable.
This is the next step for Trump to declare a state of emergency and force the cancellation of the mid-term elections in November. Trump has said many times that he will cancel the mid-term elections. When he was elected the second time Trump said there may not be any more elections. He claimed that “the country will be fixed” and their votes won’t be needed.
Trump will do anything he can to stay in office and out of prison.

So will we be sending in troops to occupy Iran and replace the government with a US puppet regime? Nope, this war appears to be done all through air power, missiles and drones killing innocent civilians and putting US pilots and operatives at risk of capture and being ripped to shreds by angry civilians?
The invasion and occupation of Afghanistan was such a success, not.
Israel is under attack, will the US also be attacked by Iran?

As I expected: the loony Leftists who read and comment on this blog favor the Iranian theocrats.

Bondi couldn’t change We the People’s focus from the Epstein papers to the stock market, so Trump makes an unconstitutional attack on Iran to distract us.
Agreed, the Iranian regime has been a source of worldwide terrorism for more than 45 years, has long brutally suppressed the Iranian people, and should have been dealt with decades ago by a coalition of nations, but Trump’s attack is nonetheless a violation of our Constitution…not that Trump has ever much cared about our Constitution.

The international community has indeed dealt with the Iranian theocracy, most notably (but not exclusively) via the JCPOA, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. By all accounts, Iran was keeping its part of the bargain. Then, because the deal was negotiated by Barack Obama, Donald T***p single-handedly destroyed it.

Bill,
Exactly right.
Trump was determined to wipe out anything Obama accomplished and the agreement that stopped Iran was one of his biggest. That’s what Trump “obliterated.”

Regime change can only succeed if the Iranian people support it.
Are we and Israel going to attempt to foist the Shah’s son on Iran as a puppet so that Western oil companies can loot Iranian oil?

If the Mullahs have guns, and the people don’t, those with the guns win.
I don’t think Trump or his people have thought about what happens next.
Iran could plunge into chaos.

Iran could plunge into chaos. Trump and his cabinet of flunkies have not thought this through.

A wise, informed President making this decision would be cited for taking a major, unprecedented risk.
Trump just put the next generation at risk. Iran plays the long game. Retaliation could be in a week or a decade or more.
Trump did this without Congress. He did it with (?) a Department of Defense led by a person more obsessed with punishing the Boy Scouts than the country and our allies. Did he get advice. And, did he ignore it or not understand it.
