The state of Florida—Ron DeSantis and his dumdum legislature—has decided that climate change doesn’t exist, but climate change doesn’t care. The Miami Herald reported that the last of a rare species in the Florida Keys has died—because of rising seas. The children of Florida won’t understand any of this because the State Department of Education will not buy textbooks that explain climate change. They think—I suppose—that if you don’t learn about it, it will go away.
Key Largo has a new, disturbing and first-of-its-kind graveyard. There are no headstones, no burial markers, no names, no bodies.
It’s the last place an incredibly rare species of tree called the Key Largo tree cactus was seen alive, back in 2023. The killer? All the clues point to climate change.
At least, that’s what a newly published paper suggests. Scientists have been watching this particular stand of cacti — known for their height (up to 20 feet) and brown hairlike puffball they grow around their flowers — since the 1990s.
At the time, researchers determined that a two-acre patch in John Pennekamp State Park was the only population in the U.S. of Pilosocereus millspaughii, an offshoot from the larger Caribbean population of the cactus. But as of last year, the very last of the bunch is gone. And researchers believe sea level rise was the main culprit — rising tides and groundwater turning the soil too salty for the plant to survive. It appears this local extinction (also known as extirpation) could be the first climate-driven demise of a species in the United States.
“As far as we know, from any published research we can find, this is the first case we can find,” same James Lange, lead botanist with Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens and co-author of the study, which was published Tuesday in the Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. “It was tragic to see as we monitored this over the years,” he said. “It was a big, old beautiful plant, one of the things that makes the Keys unique. And we’ve lost it.”

This is a tragedy. And a bellwether.

Yes, it is, and this tree will be only one of many species that will not be able to adapt or survive climate change.

I have lived on this huge marble for nearly 75 years. Of the many lessons I have learned, if not taught to my kids and students, is that the space between the truth and denial can be catastrophic. Believing it isn’t there may be one’s opinion rooted in denial, however facts always reign supreme. De Santis and his dumb dumbs have failed at this vital life lesson.

There is nothing conservative about destroying the environment or ignoring the consequences of climate change. “Drill baby, Drill” is no solution for the future.

Removing any mention of the real causes of climate change from textbooks means MAGA thinks they can blame climate change on liberals for every hurricane and flood without scientific facts getting in the way.

There’s been such a dearth of butterflies in our neighborhood that we retooled our back and front lawns to be extra pollinator friendly. We raised and released monarchs and Eastern Black Swallowtsils from eggs on our dill and milkweed plants using netted habitat terrariums. We planted multiple milkweed species and flowers. We lost a number of monarch chrysalises due to pesticide drift. Almost everyone around us uses pesticides which contributes to the precipitous decline.

That’s very sad. Years ago, I lived on a lake that was being choked with algae plants that grew tall. The algae flourished because of detergents that seeped into the water.

Someone tried to kill off another rare Florida species today–Bob Shepherd. I was hit by a car while bicycling. A young man on his cell phone and distracted. Bike totaled. iPhone screen cracked. Myself quite sore this evening, trouble lifting arm, legs painful enough that I cannot walk at all without a cane. But I was lucky. I shall live to see Kamala Harris sworn in as President of the United States in January!!! Love, peace, and safety to all here. –Bob S.

I am sorry you that you were hit by a car. Did you get checked out by a doctor? I don’t trust those narrow bike lanes next to the car lanes. All it takes is one distracted driver.

It’s as though people in cars do not see you at all. This is the THIRD time I have been hit. Extremely sore today. Cannot lift my right arm. Walking with considerable difficulty. Doctor’s appointment tomorrow.

Go to an emergency room. I tripped and fell last week and got lots of bruises. I went to the emergency room on Sunday and the doctor ordered a CatScan. I thought I had broken a rib. It was a huge relief to know that nothing was broken. No internal injuries.

So sorry to hear of your “accident” Bob. I have come close (driver looking down at cellphone) but was able to move away on time–she never knew she almost hit a pedestrian.
One thing I have learned over the years–the body takes its ever-loving time to heal but, with patience, it does. CBK
