I got this card from my friend Leonie Haimson. It reminded me of when I could move like the person on the card.
Of course, there was also a great card from Cece Cunningham, with a picture of a gray-haired old lady with a gorgeous body, waist about 24″, in a bikini.. The card says, “Helen ran out of funds halfway through her extreme makeover.”

Happy Birthday Diane: You are less than two months older than I. We old birds are certainlly finding ways to stay busy. I have a book coming out Aug.1 How Could We Harness a Hurricane? and iNK is publishing in print its first collection of Nonfiction Minutes–30 People Who Changed the World. We are soooo excited and happy.

Dear Diane Ravitch, I didn’t send a ‘birthday card’ because I have never met you … however, you are a hero (heroine) in my esteem. My gratitude and praise for your dedication to saving Public Education (the backbone of Democracy) and exposing the Koch Bros. and their like … is a substitute for a birthday card. Their greed and appetite for power… looks and acts like fascism In disguise. I’m a senior citizen of low income and live in DC … that’s why I fail to $upport your work. Never mind, you continue to plow the field, expose the ‘weeds’ and plant the seeds …regardless of the season and ‘climate change’. You are a ‘re-play’ of John Dewey. Wish you well, Jenefer Ellingston, Green Party, Wash. DC

Dear Jennifer,
Thank you for your good wishes. If you join the Network for Public Education, that’s a great gift too. Membership is free. The only thing we ask of members is to respond to our alerts when public education or schools are threatened. Our members write, phone, and/orcsend emails. Thus, we are able to generate thousands of responses in every state and D.C. Join the action. Both NPE and NPE Action.

Diane, first: Happy Birthday!
I was wondering if you’d seen the movie Wag the Dog; if not, see if you can find it and watch it. It’s the story of a president who is embroiled in a sex scandal. His “people” hire a Hollywood director to create a war so people are distracted from the real issue.
I thought of that when I saw Rachel Maddow the other night when she noted that while we were raging about the bullying and bad behavior of 45, his staff is generating policies that no one is talking about.
