The gossip website Gawker reports that a liberal blogger started the petition to allow GOP delegates to carry guns at their Cleveland convention. It was intended as a satire, but the petition gathered 51,000 signatures.
I am reminded of an incident in the early 1960s when a little-known group sent out a press release protesting animal nudity. The press release referred with disgust to cows that had their breasts exposed, and other animals displaying their genitalia. The group proposed that animals should be properly dressed. I don’t recall whether any news outlet took this group seriously.
But we live in such strange times that nothing is beyond belief.
Another one of those “I Can’t Believe They Actually Did That” deals!
As bizarre as that seems, I think it was done to make a point. In Ohio we have open carry gun laws. This was put into place by Republican legislators catering to rhe NRA. I believe t h e petition, even though satirical, was signed by people who “got” the satire and who thought it was a good idea. Many of us on Ohio believe that more guns do NOT make us safer. But, it is interesting that those who shove their interpretation of the 2nd Amendment in everyone’s faces don’t want the rights extended to those who attend their RNC convention.
Man….it is so unreal to witness, and even experience, in this hypervolatile, deeply partisan, heavily infotained society, what caricatures we Americans have become of ourselves. We are the embodiment of the funhouse mirror images I would see as a kid at amusement parks and such.
Not surprised at all. GOP politicians like to blow a lot of hot air about “Second Amendment Rights” but they’re the first to ban guns anywhere they might personally be.
It’s quite a trick to satirize a political party that so successfully parodies itself, especially while slogging through the Post-Literate Era, when so many people are incapable of even recognizing it.
We may live in a Golden Age of Satire, but it’s a bit like being a drug addict, whose tolerance has grown to the point where they need ever-increasing amounts of the drug just to remain “normal.”
“We may live in a Golden Age of Satire. . . ”
For my money I’ll still go with before and around the turn of the last century with Ambrose Bierce and “The Devil’s Dictionary”.

Someone should petition to allow brains at the Republican Convention.
I bet it wouldn’t get anywhere near 51,000 signatures.
I’m a frequent reader of this blog. For some levity this morning, Jimmy Kimmel has a hilarous solution for animal nudity (horse pants). Link below is his pitch for them on Shark Tank.
I am finding this blog more and more difficult to visit; lately it is reminding me why I do not regard myself as liberal. Liberals…I’m sorry, “progressives’ are wildly intolerant of any opinion that challenges the orthodoxy of liberalism…I’m sorry, “progressivism.”
Gun ownership in this country is a right, not a privilege. If you don’t like it, organize a constitutional convention and see how far you’ll get in altering the Bill of Rights. Heck, maybe we can alter some other rights. And spare me the toxic ignorance of muskets versus “assault” weapons; in America, every gun sold is one bullet for one trigger pull. True “assault” guns have been illegal since Prohibition.
The petition is obviously satire, but i doubt many Republicans would protest. I sure wouldn’t. If local Cleveland laws permit gun carrying rights inside such a venue, I can guarantee it will be the safest place in America.
No, you can’t guarantee that it will be the safest place in America. When Congresswoman, Gabby Giffords was shot in Tucson, the two people in the crowd with guns almost shot each other. And I wish all of you 2nd Amendment supporters would sign up for the National Guard. When you all carry on about your rights to carry anywhere, you conveniently forget about the introductory part of the sentence about the “well regulated militia”.
RS&tL,
“Liberals…I’m sorry, “progressives’ are wildly intolerant of any opinion that challenges the orthodoxy of liberalism…I’m sorry, “progressivism.””
Ah, labels whose definitions are so vague and ambiguous serve no purpose but to befuddle debate.
Be that as it may, as the saying goes “they’ll get my gun(s) when they pry my dead cold fingers from it(them)”. And as I like to say when people throw names like liberal, progressive or commie pinko faggot at me; “I’m so far left I’m right!, Where are you?”.
A “militia” is a group of civilian soldiers who own their guns. If the founders meant “army,” why not just say army? “Well-regulated” then does not mean what liberals wish it would mean today, either. But supposing you’re correct, tell me which portion of “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” is ambiguous?
How about “arms.” Arguably “infringed,” also.
