Samantha Steckloff, a member of the state’s House of Representatives, tweeted that the House defeated vouchers by 56-51. Steckloff represents Michigan’s 37th district.
@SamSteckloff tweeted:
Public tax dollars for private vouchers FAILED the Michigan House! Majority of us agree that public dollars should go to public schools and public institutions!

Was this the first time voucher legislation failed in Michigan?
The destroy public education crime syndicate has a history of never giving up. Once they fail, the seem to try, try and try again without end.

Voters in Michigan turned down a voucher referendum sponsored by Dick and Betsy DeVos in 2000.
The vote against vouchers was overwhelming.

Most of the reply ink on this web site had been spilled discussing Jan 6 and its investigators. Good enough, but most of us are education-oriented voters, and this illustrates how the right wing uses the opportunity given them by pushing through
State-level reforms geared toward gradual gains in local and state politics.
So I celebrate the win. But I know they will be back, re-naming legislation that does the job they want with a more innocuous moniker, creating disturbances that will distract the electorate in order to gain power, to the end that government of for and by the people will vanish from the earth. Sorry Abe.

Great news yes but hoping for a day when the vote is 100-7. I’ve honestly never quite understood vouchers to begin with. Using public dollars to bankroll private (i.e. religious) education is a clear violation of church/state separation no? These self-anointed “originalists” seem to have no problem throwing the Constitution under the bus whenever it suits their anti-Union grifting purposes.

My guess is there was a typo in the bill, so the legislators thought they were actually voting to increase funding for vouchers.
