The Edythe and Eli Broad Foundation now owns complete control of the schoolsof the District of Columbia.
With the appointment of Lewis Ferebee, former superintendent of Indianapolis, where he collaborated with the Mind Trust to expand privatization, D.C. is now a Broadie district.
DCist.com reports:
“The top three educational leaders in the District of Columbia all have one thing in common: they’ve all studied under a wealthy philanthropist’s educational leadership program that promotes a business perspective in the management of public schools and the use of charters.
“The D.C. state superintendent Hanseul Kang, the deputy mayor of education Paul Kihn, and acting schools chancellor Lewis Ferebee have each been through training at the Broad Center for the Management of School Systems, which houses both the Broad Academy and the Broad Residency in Urban Education.
“Those who support the training program say it offers a unique corporate-like training experience for school leaders and helps them form lasting friendships. Critics of the program say the teachings encourage school leaders to undermine democratic control of public education by making top-down reforms and promoting charter schools.
“There have been hundreds of school leaders that have gone through Broad training, including former DCPS chancellor Antwan Wilson. Kaya Henderson was also named a superintendent in residence at The Broad Center in 2017. But, if Ferebee is confirmed, this will be the first time all of D.C. Public Schools’ top public education leaders will be Broad scholars.”
Michelle Rhee started the Corporate Reform takeover of D.C. in 2007, imposing a harsh evaluation system that led to high turnover of teachers and principals. She was not a Broadie, however; she came out of Teach for America. But after she became a superstar, she joined the board ofthe unaccredited Broad Superintendents’ Academy.
Since 2007, the district has experienced major cheating scandals and, recently, a graduation rate scandal that cast doubt on many of the claims of success.
Despite it’s “reform” leadership, D.C. continues to havethe biggest achievement gaps of any district in the nation, about double the size of the black-white, Hispanic-white gaps in other urban districts.
There is something strangely satisfying about knowing that disciples of Eli Broad have taken complete control of D.C. They will have no one else to blame if they don’t turn the District into one of the nation’s top-performing districts, as Rhee long ago promised.

Seriously, when does this end?

I still have mild PTSD everytime I see Ferebee’s face in the news. I knew him from NC and he is just the worst. He has nothing but utter contempt for teachers—yes, all of them. I am absolutely shocked that he has avoided personal scandals long enough to get this far. People in DC need to be paying very close attention to him.

Very bad news but not surprising. The Billionaire Boys Club running education and America have nothing to lose by financing more damage; they have lost none of their wealth and power which buy them the govt and operatives they want at all levels, which is where oligarchy leads. Of course, the only answer is democracy, more democracy, and then some more, which means vast wealth at the top can only be stopped by mass revolts from below. This is where snowballing teacher strikes come in as starting points if the teachers ignore their renegade union leaders and stay out longer for much more; this is why the corporate centrist Dem candidates–Klobuchar, Harris, Booker, Gillebrand, O’Rourke, Biden–cannot possibly rescue public education and build the public sphere for democracy and equality.

These corporate Democrats are much more likely to continue the “choice” debacle while paying lip service to public education. We’ve been there and done that, and these corporate centrist helped promote the disinvestment in public education that we face today.

more and more reason to quit looking for that ‘center’ candidate: only a loud and publicly noted wrenching separation might turn the word Democrat back into public service protective

Charles, do you also believe everything Trump says about how successful he is and how great he is and how innocent he is?
If you do, that might explain why your confirmation bias seems to seek only extremely biased alt-right conservative fake media sources to support your flawed logic.

I came of age during Vietnam and Watergate. I stopped believing everything politicians say, several decades ago. Nixon said “I am not a crook”. You may not believe this, but I voted for McGovern.
Although I support many of Pres Trump’s policies, I find many aspects of the man to be reprehensible.

“Reform” is just more educational colonialism in which the white elite takeover the policy of communities of color. Why shouldn’t a mostly minority school district get the same democratic leadership as other school districts? Why should minority students get teaching temps instead of trained, certified teachers like white students? “Reform” is a fancy term for a separate and unequal education and treatment.

When top administrators have weird corporate titles, it means they lack the certification for traditional jobs in public schools, that are often described in state law.

I don’t agree.
The Broadies will always find someone else to blame: teachers, parents, children, stray dogs, and probably the fake media.
Broadies are no different than Trump.
They will never admit failure and always blame it on someone or something else. And they will say we only need more time, a few more decades, a century or two, and maybe even a thousand more years to prove we are right.

Education’s huge problem in D.C.-
Only three higher ed institutions in D.C. are public. The remaining 17 are private.
The most well-known D.C. universities are religious and conservative. Private university administrators are silent about or, complicit with, privatization’s goals, which creates a single political voice about education in the Capitol. The public is denied the representation it would have if public university scholars and alumni, who are more reliably supporters of the common good, had a bigger presence in D.C.
The American donor class, like most among the wealthy, are colonialists. Church leaders have historically turned a blind eye to colonialism’s impact on people.
It isn’t surprising to learn that the fears of the NAACP, BLM, and SPLC about private school expansion has no import to most private schools.
Catholic churches are apparently tone deaf to the timing of their private school advocacy while the church is in the news for widespread, institutionalized coverup of a large number of priests molesting students.
