This weekend, Teach for America is celebrating its 25th anniversary. As befits an organization with hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and assets,TFA is throwing itself a grand party at the vast Washington, D.C. convention center.
Some TFA alumni are not happy with the corporation. They criticize its role in privatizing public education, teaching children to conform, and undermining the teaching profession. The TFA propaganda machine does not welcome dissenters. It calls them “haters” and “traitor” and “enemies.”
Amber Kim is a TFA grad. She has grown critical. But, she insists, she is not a hater, and she refuses to be silenced or turned into an outcast.
She has organized a session at the TFA celebration for critical alumni, where they can convene, confer, and compare notes.
She writes:
“This February, though, at TFA’s 25th anniversary summit in Washington DC, I will be facilitating a sanctioned space for critics of TFA. The “Critics Not Haters” brunch will be held on Sunday, February 7 from 9 to 11am. All critical Summit participants are welcome to come and process their experiences at the Summit as well as critique TFA in general. This brunch came about after several deep conversations with TFA National staff. I requested space for all TFA alums, including critical alums, to collaborate and discuss perspectives that are important to them. This brunch is a space for TFA critics to build community, make connections, and hear numerous TFA counter-stories….
“It is important for me to state that I am very critical of how TFA has constructed, promoted, and empowered a very narrow, hegemonic definition of an “excellent education.” I am critical of the fact that TFA (often covertly) proclaims that an excellent education for all children is simply the content of the education that has historically been provided to and reserved for affluent, White children rather than an education that prepares students to challenge the deep injustices that undergird our society. I believe that TFA (covertly and overtly) pushes its corps members to deliver–unapologetically and uncritically–that kind of “rigorous,” “No Excuses” education to the students they serve while in TFA. Then, because of their (limited) experience in TFA, corps members go on to promote, teach in, lead, and create “No Excuses” schools (KIPP, STRIVE, Uncommon Schools, BES, etc.) where it is normal to hear “Voices off!” commanded or to see black and brown students marching in straight, silent lines to class. Schools where teachers are armed with their copies of Teach Like a Champion and equipped with robotic and patronizing “behavior narration” in order to improve test scores. Test score equity, though, is NOT equity when the means and methods used to achieve equal test scores are dehumanizing and rely on controlling the bodies, voices, and minds of other people’s children.
“TFA’s promotion of and alliance with these methods and No Excuses Charters (no matter how covert), however, is intentional and consistent. TFA tries to appear neutral and denies any formal connection, but the ties between TFA and the reform movement are evident and strong. TFA does not take any responsibility for the test-score obsessed, compliance-driven machine it has put in motion, nor does it own the harm that it does to students and the communities it purports to serve. So, yes, TFA makes me think critically. It makes me angry, makes me sad, makes me fight, makes me speak out, but it does not make me a hater.”

It is possible to hate an evil enemy who serves the dark side.

TFA at its top, directing levels does not understand something very very basic: the definition of a true friend is that they tell you what you NEED to hear, not what you WANT to hear.
Amber Kim and Gary Rubinstein, among many others, are just those kinds of friends.

Americans shout their contempt for the management of corporations and for the oligarchs behind TFA, when they cheer Bernie Sanders.
Gates’ push to get his data plans into higher ed. uses the same false selling message…. without him, the richest man in America, the rest of us would be at a loss to identify
the problems of poverty in this country. We can identify them but, can’t rectify them until Gates, and his friends in Silicon Valley and, in hedge funds, release their stranglehold on the riches, the 99%’s productivity provided them.

After looking at all the well fed and well dressed adults in the video, at so many students in varieties of uniforms, and at the conditions of the schools that were featured, I couldn’t help but remember photos of what so many Detroit public schools actually look like to those that work in them.
Just one example from a cursory google search, 1-20-2016, “Disturbing images of the mold, mushrooms, and bullet holes in Detroit’s schools that led to teachers’ massive ‘sickout’”—

TFA is an insult to professional teachers. It is impossible to turn out a fully trained teacher after five weeks. Would anyone want to receive services from a dentist, doctor, nurse, or accountant that was in the field after five weeks of training? After five weeks of training the individual is a shell, robotic script reader. That is not a true teacher that understands child development, group dynamics and subject expertise. You could argue that since these students have high SAT scores, they are superior. That is an unfounded assumption. I had high SAT scores. It took me time to evolve into what I would consider to be a versatile teacher in command of the craft of teaching. An excellent teacher thinks, responds, regroups and pulls out new ideas from the teacher’s toolkit; it’s like a dance. They don’t work from a script. TFA is the “brainchild” of those that want to destroy teaching as a profession.

Wow and no statistical and verifiable stats regarding their outstanding success, the mind-blowing achievement of their corp members and their ‘scholars’ and still NO evidence of closing the gap. Well it looks like TFA should be formally welcomed to the status-quo establishment of frauds, cons, and union-busters! Welcome, welcome.

Eva says no chair throwers allowed, which seems reasonable, but Barack says the public schools suspend too many? Kind of a mixed message on discipline. What’s the system wide solution? The public schools are some giant second tier alternative school?
No way. Public schools are first tier. More alternative schools for those who are suspended from charter schools and public schools?

It strikes me as utterly bizarre that an organization putatively dedicated to improving the state of education in the United States could be so averse to criticism. Of what is TFA afraid? Solid and effective organizations ought to be able to stand up to criticism, and if they cannot, then make changes necessary to do so.

This puts me in mind of a guest post on the blog of Gary Rubinstein entitled “How Interning for TFA Convinced me of its Injustice.”
The piece, two paragraphs near the end below, belongs in the category of “painfully honest.”

Leaving TFA was like leaving a cult. Even after my manager received my resignation email I would get occasional emails asking me to do something for their initiative on campus “as a favor.” TFA does not like you to leave their inner circle. You can unsubscribe from their general newsletters, but it’s harder to unsubscribe from someone you once exchanged holiday presents with. I was shaken for weeks after resigning from TFA. I was relieved and better-rested and happier, but I was also afraid–of what, exactly, I am still not sure. I felt that I just barely escaped Teach for America’s dream cycle–indeed, TFA’s indoctrination. I was introduced to TFA as a college freshman, I interned for them for two years, and, had they had it “their way,” I would have interned for them for another year before teaching for two years and then being hired as a recruitment manager. The cycle from recruited to recruiter would be complete. I do feel that I was briefly inducted into a cult, and escaped to tell the tale, which is more than I can say for any other CCC I have ever met.
It is now my senior year of college. The woman who had been my manager has moved to another department within TFA, and on August 1st I got my first recruiting email from my Bryn Mawr’s new lead recruiter. She has sent me some of the most worrisome and disturbing emails I have ever received. TFA has responded to the valid, well-articulated articles by former corps members critiquing TFA that went viral several months ago by telling me their words aren’t valid because they weren’t in the right “corps member mindset.” TFA has tried to convince me to support their efforts by buying a shirt from J. Crew. TFA has tried to convince me to apply to the program by bribing me with a holiday gift. I have not responded to these emails.

I keep hoping the “bright young things” recruited by TFA will catch on to the fact they are being exploited by the organization. I keep hoping they will realize they are part of a message of colonialism being perpetrated by TFA. They should ask themselves if they were treated the way their students are treated as they made their way through their K-12 education.

Hooray Amber Kim! Your writing is exquisitely articulate – as well as impassioned, concise, and informative. I have little experience with TFA, but the strength of conviction heard in your voice is what I long for amongst my colleagues in the face of our public school insanity. (My colleagues don’t read this blog and most have never heard of Ms. Ravitch…)

Sounds like an institutionally sanctioned incestuous relationship. I thought that inbreeding would harm both the population and the individuals. Perhaps it has and continues to do so.

Hey Diane, are you going to take on DeRay McKesson now that he’s running for mayor of Baltimore? He too is a TFA, he did his 2 years with them, and then became a “ruthless administrator” according to NYT profile of him and #blacklivesmatter. How ruthless? I don’t know. I have a question for Amber Kim. If you are so staunchly against TFA and “No Excuse” charter schools, why do you continue to take paychecks from them and work in their schools. KIPP, DSST, even TFA – they’ve all paid you (or currently pay you as with DSST and KIPP Colorado) to consult for them. Seems incredibly hypocritical to me.
