John Thompson reviews Anthony Cody’s néw book THE EDUCATOR AND THE OLIGARCH. The book recapitulates Cody’s five-part debate with the Gates Foundation. Thompson says Cody demolished their spokesmen.
Thompson writes that Cody won the debate, hands down:
“They probably didn’t expect a mere teacher to assemble and concisely present such an overwhelming case against their policies. But, who knows?, perhaps they were completely unaware of the vast body of social science that Cody drew upon, and they blamed the messenger for the education research he brought to the table. The Educator and the Oligarch explains how the failed Gates reforms could create an education dystopia.”
Best of all is Thompson’s summary of Cody’s proposal for how Gates ought to be evaluated.
Example:
“Since Bill Gates, more than any other person, is responsible for the absurd evaluations that are now being imposed on teachers, Cody wonders if Gates’ practice as a philanthropist should be evaluated. If so, what would it look like? Cody makes a strong case that in the tradition of the Danielson and Marzano teacher evaluation frameworks, an abbreviated version of his evaluation would look like the following:
Standard 1: Awareness of the Social Conditions Targeted by Philanthropy
Rating: Below Standard
… Actions and statements by him and his representatives indicate ignorance of the pervasive effects of poverty, and the overwhelming research that indicates the need to address these effects directly.
Recommendation for Professional Growth: We recommend Bill Gates take a year off from his work as a philanthropist, and work as a high school instructor in an urban setting. …

Public schools should boycott Amplify. I can’t believe this guy runs around trashing public schools WHILE trying to sell them product. When he sends salespeople into a public school district do they know he spends a good part of every day saying they’re all mediocre and bottom of the barrel?
There are a lot of tablets. I don’t know why public schools have to buy his.

The organization, Color of Change, recently asked Microsoft to account for its hiring and pay practices. Gates had the opportunity to create a showcase for his vision, in his own company.
But, he directed his focus, to a different market, saturating every point of influence, in education. After a few short years, an unproven grand scheme, Common Core, had traction and implementation.
Then, Microsoft announced a money-making deal/idea with Pearson, to develop Common Core curriculum.
If Bill Gates had ideas to improve hiring and GDP, he could have started with this own company or, he could have tackled the greatest and most immediate obstacle, which is the financial sector’s drag on the economy.

Jon.. Gates should definitely have to earn a teacher salary perhaps based on the merit system and then pay rent wherever he could afford it. I doubt he would even be able to afford a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop. “Education Expert” he is not. Would love to be a fly on the wall watching him teach! And yup, if he had to do an SLO and use Danielson or Marzano’s rubric…he might start to see how it feels like to be erroneously pegged and directed against his will. Let him have a class of 45 students who are in 6th grade and get no recess too! 45 was his magic number wasn’t it … any good teacher….? Heck could he even deal with 20 title one students? Let him be forced to follow a developmentally inappropriate curriculum with a fast-paced pacing calendar that barely gives his impoverished students (who might be new to his classroom at any time during the year or might depart too) a chance to digest or practice what they learn (that is if they can understand the English yet or if they are not suffering from tooth decay problems etc…). Let him give high stakes test after high stakes test and then receive a poor evaluation when the scores are low. Let him be directed EXACTLY how to write up his lesson plans, let him spend wasted time on posting one zillion different objectives in his room – not really for the students but for people like his former self who might come through and want to check off a rubric indicating “did that … did this…”. Instead of being able to ask a principal who used to be a veteran teacher to stop by and offer some advice, his 22 year old Broad trained principal will be way too busy drowning in a see of nonsensical data and other paper work!
We should never let Gates forget that WHEN he was at Harvard, if Harvard followed lock-step rigid protocols, he NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN ACCESS to their equivalent of a super computer which truly enabled him to develop his computer-related work. He was left alone and not micro-managed (until he did something that brought him before the ad board… he invited a friend to join him in the computer lab when this was not authorized). Anyone read the alumni magazine that talked about the “Bill Gates” story at Harvard? Everyone talks about the fact that he dropped out of Harvard. Well, without having been allowed to be a “square peg” and not pounded into a round hole while there, things for him might have been very different for him. How he has forgotten this!!

In large, expensive urban areas like mine, Gates could well afford a Starbucks latte because first year licensed teachers here earn $50K per year. However, since Gates has no teaching credential, Gates should definitely NOT be paid what a certified teacher earns. In fact, Gates is not even qualified to work as a teacher aide in my district. Thus, Gates should get no more than minimum wage. I wish a lot more billionaires were required to live on minimum wage, too, as many Early Childhood Education teachers do in non-unionized schools.

Victorino.. no .. under corporate “ed reform” there is the concept of merit pay. So if Gates does not do well when testing students, he would earn considerably less than a teacher who manages to teach to the test enough that his/her students pass the test. And then, he is a college drop out so I guess he would be under alternative certification and would have to do at least 5 weeks of “training” to become an expert teacher. He would be low on the teacher scale before being fired for incompetence.

Ohio is doing one good thing. They’re recognizing public schools that do well with low income students.
One of them is a small rural school here, and they are right now negotiating with a federal mediator prior to going on strike. Teachers haven’t had a raise in 5 years. I think they should go out. They’re making less than they were 5 years ago.

Only one suggestion about Gates taking a crack at being a teacher. Don’t put him in a challenging class. We know he would fail there. Let him try it at an average suburban school. He would get eaten alive. I would love to read the social media comments that would evolve. Or, how about Rate My Teacher ratings?

But he has an honorary Doctorate from Harvard (which he basically bought with a cool quarter billion dollars), so he could take Deasy’s old LA Super job and fire substitutes with real college degrees.

We just got out of an IEP meeting for my grandson. The level of professionalism among the staff was very high (both my wife and I were counselors, so we know what to look for). I would love for the detractors to have sat in on that meeting – they would have been completely lost.

This was also my experience in a well-heeled high-tax area of NJ, w/2 out of 3 sons IEP, between ’97-‘2010. It worries me that SpEd budgets are being cut in many middle-class & poor areas, particularly since NCLB / RTTT policies hang on. IDEA law and NCLB go hand-in-hand. Without high-stakes annual testing, schools have more flexibility to teach the student at the level he’s at. NCLB is a sort-of assembly-line approach which calls for Q/A repair pit-stops. Without those pit stops, students are either moved to the next station warts and all, or left to lie where they fall.

I like a lot of the suggestions above, such as freezing Gates’ assets while requiring that he live in the area where he teaches.
However, Gates is a college drop out. What could he teach, technology? And what school district would give a college drop out his own class –one that he buys new computer labs for, with all the bells and whistles? I don’t think Gates would encounter a lot of typical behavior problems in a computer lab and it would be too easy for him to ignore students who are off task there.
Since Gates and his cronies are trying to prove that teachers can be replaced by technology, a job teaching about technology could be a dream come true for him, even though it would most likely result in the same kind of false data that his current researchers feed him. No, Gates should be required to teach Math or ELA, as stipulated in his beloved Common Core Standards, preferably with stints in both lower and higher income areas. And it should not be allowed to occur in a charter school, since they don’t serve the same demographics as neighborhood public schools, plus teaching is often scripted there.
Be very careful about what you ask for, and be sure to dictate the terms whenever you are dealing with someone who has more money than entire nations!

Brilliant work by Cody. I hope his book is a best-seller and includes the exercise in evaluating Gate’s effectiveness as a philanthropist in education.
I just wonder how many people understand that Gates wants total control of the press and the stats that are publicized and used to judge American education. His megalomania is becoming more visible with each new initiative.

He is issuing policy briefs under the banner of his “data quality” campaign. The full campaign is coming into view. It goes beyond the EdWeek report cards for states and Newsweek publications of his ratings of teacher education programs.
He is issuing explicit policy briefs for USDE to follow his vision for the proper choice of data and proper presentations of “data” so these will reinforce his own vision of what American education should be–and is not.
These policy briefs have the effect of undermining the work of the National Center for Education Statistics. They undermine the credibility of other federal data-gathering and reporting on education unless those efforts comport with Gates’ idea of what people should know and value as they think about American education, hear reports, see data in charts in colorful graphics, and read about schools, even in easy to tweet thinklets.
Gates’ Data Quality Campaign has also issued policy briefs for state and district administrators, and school boards on what data to put forward and how to style it to represent his own views about what is important.
Now he has moved on to assert how all of these levels of reporting should be styled to communicate with parents and the press–how to publicize evaluations on the “effectiveness” of teachers, schools, principals, teacher education programs, school board policies and budgets.
He is promoting these efforts as no more than providing “information” based on “quality data.” Every policy brief on data use is designed to forward choice as a given, to forward his definition of “effective” as a given, to provide information of use for red-lining schools and allowing “choice” to segregate schools even more than they already are. His concept of “quality data” provides advertising for online learning as “personalized.”
Gates has outsourced so much of the PR for this campaign that he does not even grasp that the PR person he hired for his latest policy brief, for parents and the press, just set up some strange categories of “valued data” that killed off half of his “college and career” ready initiative. The PR firm dumped “career and tech programs” into the dustbin of “non-academic” matters–low budget priority. That’s good for a laugh, but the same category of “non-academic” matters includes special education and ELL students–not funny– and not funny is the use of that same category for studies in the arts and foreign language. The word salad is so bag the same category includes uniforms. Maybe someone was on crack.
For this latest policy brief, Gates has enlisted support from ten groups. It needs to be said more often that all of these “supporters” can be regarded as his hired hands–bought and paid for by grants. These groups are not free agents.
You know this is latest policy brief is bad news when the writers of the document are unembarrassed to list among among supporters of the project StudentsFirst (Michelle Rhee’s legacy), Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education, and the hustlers of the Common Core State Standards–who probably have not read the fine print in this latest policy brief- -October 23, 2014
I am analyzing how Gates is steering public reports on American education under the banner of “transparency” and presenting trustworthy data in easy to understand formats–with researchers at Stanford advising whether to use ratings like those for ice-skating from 0 to 10, or classic A-F grades, or travel guide ratings where people in the know and flush with cask look for five-star ratings.

This is an extremely dangerous man. It’s not just a hobby for him and, based on his history, no one should ever assume that his motives are altruistic. Exercising control over the press and education is how the Nazis succeeded in exerting totalitarian rule. No single person should ever be allowed to have that kind of authority over a nation, let alone someone who was never elected by the people –which includes all the appointed cronies Gates has bought, like Duncan, and those no longer in office, such as Jeb Bush. Very scary stuff!

Modification of the FY2015 Assessment Schedule
Due to the increased demands required for schools and teachers to implement the new Florida Standards and concerns to protect instructional time, a review of the FY15 assessment schedule for the purpose of providing additional time for teaching and learning was conducted. District staff and elementary, middle and high school principals provided input.
The following recommendations will be implemented, which will reduce the number of assessments, increase instructional time, and allow the District to meet all state and federal requirements.
In an effort to assist you with questions regarding our assessments, we have created an Assessment FAQ for your use. It does not answer every question you may receive regarding assessments but it does provide you with a thorough response for many misconceptions.
The recommendations are effective immediately as follows:

He sees the world only through his Microsoft-colored brain-eyes-glasses. He believes everybody should be like him and be so successful.
Sorry Bill, yes you are a one-in-a-million person, very intelligent, self-driven, high self efficacy and desiring the dominate whatever field you are in.
Yet, we teach the other 999,999 who don’t have your attributes, and thankfully don’t want to dominate every market they pursue.
The Tech-industry needs you Bill, but not the education sector. Heck, I think paper books are superior to pdf files anytime.
To be honest Bill, when you were a kid you didn’t even need school for you are so gifted, but we teach the other 99%. Remember Bill, not everyone is like you, wants to be like you, nor wants to dominate the market-share niche they work and live in. Us teachers are happy with 5 figure salaries, and unless you want to take your excessive wealth and increase our salaries, then stay out of our schools (and we want tell you how to better run Microsoft….you know your business model is pretty aggressive, trying to kill all competitors…shame on you Bill, didn’t your mother teacher you to share!!!)
