The teachers of Dedham, Massachusetts, voted overwhelmingly to go out on strike.
DEDHAM — Hundreds of striking teachers took to the streets Friday in this suburban town, holding placards, marching with students and parents, and cheering fresh support from high-profile Democratic politicians. Meanwhile, signs emerged that stalled negotiations could resume this weekend.
The first teachers strike in 12 years in Massachusetts followed an overwhelming vote of 275 to 2 on Thursday to walk off the job despite a state ruling that the strike is illegal. Public schools were closed Friday in this community of 25,000 people, bordering Boston.
Timothy Dwyer, president of the Dedham Education Association, called the strike “a last resort” after nearly two years of failed negotiations over salary increases, health insurance, and other issues such as sexual harassment grievances and cellphone use in the classroom.
“Over the past several decades, the candidate who wins the Catholic vote has won the Presidency.” The Catholic population in Massachusetts is second only in percentage to R.I.
Does the diocese support the teachers? It would be very meaningful for the Catholic laity and clergy to support the strike. Prosperity Catholics with deep pockets are antagonistic to labor.
Sean Fieler, funder of the ovulation calendar, Femm App, used by the Bishop-funded Obria Clinics, is a school privatizer. BTW, the Mayo Clinic reports that 25% of women using the ovulation charting method become pregnant in the first year. Other deep pocketed Catholics spending to privatize schools- Frank Hanna and Rex Sinquefield.
Similar to the evangelical team of lawyers, Tim Busch’s Napa Institute has a team of lawyers for the same religious purpose. Acton Institute is made up of both evangelicals and Catholics.
Marched with Dedham teachers yesterday briefly, as did my family. We all attended a great rally today. My grandchildren attend Dedham schools, and we all support the teachers all the way. As a retired member of MTA, I was exhilarated by the number of teachers, families and representatives from elsewhere who showed up at the rally today. Go Dedham teachers!
