The man who was arrested for the slaughter in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh had a verified social media account on Gab, a favorite platform for followers of the Alt-Right whose views are not allowed on Twitter and Facebook.
Reading about Gab on Wikipedia sent me to an entry called “Fourteen Words.”
Reading that entry made me feel that I had fallen into a rabbit-hole of fascism.
Fourteen Words, 14, or 14/88, is a reference to slogans coined by white supremacist David Lane,[1] a founding member of the terrorist organization The Order.[2] The terms were coined while he was serving a 190-year sentence in federal prison for his role in violating the civil rights of Jewish talk show host Alan Berg, who was murdered in June 1984.[3] The slogans were publicized through now-defunct 14 Word Press, founded in 1995 by Lane’s wife to disseminate her husband’s writings.[4][5]
Lane also used the phrasing in other pamphlets including the “14 points” of his White Genocide Manifesto and further in his 88 Precepts essay, stressing his support for racial and ethnic religions, opposition to universal religions (such as Christianity), his opposition to miscegenation, his anti-Americanism,[5] and support for racial separatism.[2][6][7] Many of his concepts, ideology and values, particularly the Fourteen Words slogan, are either inspired by or derived from Adolf Hitler’s autobiographical book Mein Kampf.[8]
The terms were later adopted by white supremacists[2] and neo-Nazis,[2] white nationalists and identitarians, members of the far-right and alt-right, the most widely used variation being:
We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.[9][10][11][12]
Another less commonly used variation is:
Because the beauty of the White Aryan woman must not perish from the earth.[13]
It is sometimes combined with 88, as in “14/88” or “1488” with the 8s representing the eighth letter of the alphabet (H), with “HH” standing for “Heil Hitler,”[12] or simply as a reference to Lane’s 88 Precepts,[14] which when combined with “14” refer to Lane’s white supremacist neo-Pagan religion, Wotanism.[15]
In 2018, although dismissed by the US government as a coincidence,[16] the Trump administration’s United States Department of Homeland Security were accused of referencing both “88” in a document,[17] and the Fourteen Words by creating a similar fourteen-worded title,[18] starting with the same first three words (“We must secure”), in relation to illegal immigration and border control:
We Must Secure The Border And Build The Wall To Make America Safe Again.[19]
The slogan has been used in acts of white supremacist terrorism and violence.[2] It was central to the symbolism of 2008’s Barack Obama assassination plot,[20] which intended to kill 88 African Americans, including future President Barack Obama (at that time the Democratic Party nominee), 14 of whom were to be beheaded.[21][22] Skinhead Curtis Allgier notably tattooed the words on to his body after his murder of corrections officer Stephen Anderson,[23] and Dylan Roof’s race war-inspired Charleston church shooting was influenced by the slogan.
When everyone is greedy and doesnt care about each other. These are the horrific actions that occur. We are put on this earth to look after each other. Not for some people to be well educated living in gated communities but to watch over each other and help. To feed and cloth the hungry and so many without shelter.
We as a nation have turned our backs on people . God help us.
I wish that everyone lived by the Golden Rule—the idea that we should do unto others as we would want them to do to us. Or, as you put it, to care for each other. Unfortunately, many people don’t live by that principle. I wish I knew how to change it. The only remedy at hand is to elect people who share those values.
Pls forgive me for saying in these worst of times when innocents are slaughtered, that I think most people are in fact good, generous, tolerant, and persuadable. These horrific months are not the product of low morals in people but rather the result of a long historical process won by the wealth and power of one side which has captured awesome tools of governing and managing society. I’m still grieving for the 11 folks murdered yesterday so can’t write more…
reprehensible….and the cry of the those deracinated yobs who live in the darkest shadows of ignorance and bigotry. Such men are without esteem or honor like Magnus the Lochlanoch (barbarian Viking raider who killed, pillaged and raped destroying entire libraries). Every American should hold these vile killers in scorn and contempt.
Murdering or harming anyone on the basis of race, religion or gender identity is seriously twisted. Having worked with students from all different backgrounds and religions, I have come to the conclusion that we all have a lot more in common than any individual differences. Modern geneticists are redefining the whole concept of race, and we all carry a gene from Africa because the first human evolved from there. this includes all the Alt-Right members as well. No one group of people is better than any other. Everyone comes with a individual strengths and weaknesses. The only race that matters in life is the human race.http://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2017/science-genetics-reshaping-race-debate-21st-century/
The scariest thing is that there are a multitude of individuals who believe this doctrine and are teaching their children to hate as well. That the conservatives in this country have “embraced” those believers as a means to forward their agenda is a travesty which will haunt our history throughout the next millennium.
If you want to combat this senseless violence, be sure to vote on November 6th.
Fascinating fact of the day:
An American Jewish Committee survey of American Jews, conducted in 2017, showed the following numbers for Trump: 77 percent unfavorable, 21 percent favorable, and 1 percent not sure.
Hmmm. Wonder if this has anything to do with stuff like his saying that there were “good people on both sides” of the pro-Nazi/anti-Nazi factions in Charlottesville a couple days after the former group held a torch-lit march while chanting anti-Jewish slogans and then murdered someone. Or with his constant stoking of hate for and fear of minority populations. Or with his constant spewing of anti-immigrant vitriol and encouragement of violence at mass rallies in which he calls for a new “nationalism.” Hmmm. Like someone else we might all remember.
I look at a video of one of his rallies and am queasily reminded of certain films by Leni Riefenstahl.
Let me be as clear about this as possible: Anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic rhetoric is anti-American. These both go against everything we hold dear. We are an immigrant nation, and we are committed to equality for all without respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, creed, sex, gender, or sexual orientation. An attack on one vulnerable subgroup in our population, like the recent horrific, despicable attacks on black churches and Jewish synagogues is an attack on us all. When Trump proposes defining out of existence all transgendered Americans or barring them from service, this is an attack on us all.
Out of many, one.
No wondering about that connection.
Fact One: We know that public policy is set by the moneyed class. Princeton researchers uncovered the pretty fact that almost all policy demands of the wealthy are enacted into law in the United States, and that policies supported by the majority of Americans only become law if these laws also happen to be policies the wealthy want.
Fact Two: The Republican Party has been captured by an extremist minority of Americans that has accounted for about 30% of electorate since the end of WWII.
How are these two facts related? In order to maintain fact number one, a large portion of the American Oligarchy, along with a desiccated Democratic Party, has enabled this extremist minority to take control of the Republican Party. Using the money of this part of the American Oligarchy, this racist, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-women, anti-science, anti-common sense, electoral minority suppresses the majority through gerrymandered congressional districts, voter suppression legislation, control of state governments, court support to dismantle the New Deal and Great Society, and now, with this president, a barrage of increasingly sociopathic distraction unlike anything that the vast majority of living Americans has ever seen. (It doesn’t hurt these folks that the US Senate is now a chamber in which a majority of Senators now represents just 18% of the US population!)
The battle to preserve and extend quality public education is but one arena in which this titanic struggle is being fought. A majority of Americans wants public education, but the wealthy minority does not. A majority of Americans wants guaranteed health care, but the wealthy do not. A majority of Americans wants sensible gun control, but the wealthy do not. A majority of Americans wants armed forces that protect us rather than get us involved in wars on behalf of the wealthy, but the wealthy certainly do not. A majority of Americans wants good jobs, at a living wage, that provide a decent standard of living for everyone, but the wealthy do not. A majority of Americans wants a tolerant, widely prosperous, humane nation, but the wealthy do not.
Donald Trump is the perfect president for this moment in American history. He is an infantile, Realty-TV floozy, who knows how to gin the people up who have always hated the best in America–the 30% who hate blacks, Jews, women, immigrants, children, foreign peoples, hard-working hopeful people–just about everybody. 30% of American voters have always hated someone with a passion. Trump’s “base” is about 40% of the American electorate. With the support of a large segment of the wealthy, and the blindness of neo-liberal Democrats, the wealthy have come upon a way to preserve their selfish control over political power–via an alliance with the minority of American “haters,” and the illegitimate elevation of a moronic genius to the Presidency, one who will suck the air, and the humanity, out of any room he occupies.
Steve,
Your words are spot on and eloquent.
Yes, wonderfully clear, thank you.
Yvonne, Ira, Steve, and Bob,
Agree.
Adding- Days before the Tree of Life attack (but after the bomb was sent to Soros), Republican Kevin McCarthy, who is the House Majority Leader, echoed in a tweet, an earlier statement from the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre to CPAC members, “We can not allow Soros, Steyer and Bloomberg to buy this election… #MAGA”.
Selectively, Adelson was not identified, although he has spent the most- $88 mil. The Mercers, who are the unlikely Republican bed partners of Adelson, funded Breitbart and Steve Bannon and they spent big to support similar candidates in this election cycle.
Well said, Mr. Cohen!
That people like that exist is one thing. Other countries have them, too.
That people like that have easy access to assault weapons is the other thing. No sane country allows that.

These groups have always lived in the shadows and emerged in hate crimes well documented (thank goodness) by the Southern Poverty Law Center (who also publish Teaching Tolerance magazine – FREE for educators)
So what’s different now and should cause all of us to rise up?
1) A sick president, a GOP Senate and House, a GOP right-wing selected Supreme Court AND federal district justices AND a diminished civilian ranks employees in government

The EVIL club …
The Trumpf misadministration sends a lot of these coded messages out to its Proud Boys. Wink wink. We’re with you. It’s sickening. Vile. Have we learned nothing from the atrocities of the 20th century?
Words Matter. The impact of words is what we are observing now. Words do not just dissipate, blowing away on the wind. “Intelligence is all about context, which is history and consequence. Without the right words there is no context. “If there’s no words of truth, how do we discuss and make decisions that are rooted in fact?”
“Words Matter” is the title of a piece I began 3 years ago, and this week I heard it 3 times.
Words matter in this new era…a TRANSFORMATIVE ERA — which like all eras that transform society through a new invention or activity, it has UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES. This is the title of another essay on my desktop…next to the one labeled MENDACITY, a piece I am writing for OEN.
Only the passage of TIME reveals the inadvertent consequences of something never seen before…like nuclear fusion.
You see, in this era of transformation (information technology never seen in history) is inundating the people, with so many talking heads, so many pundits, and with so much false and misleading stories and memes, that ordinary folks, even bright, educated people who can think critically and have a modicum of prior knowledge, just give up.
Information technology presented our people with television, the first step to communicating carefully staged messages. Vance Packard foresaw the ‘mad-men’s’ interference in our elections, because they knew how to manipulate the hidden psychological persuaders… and realized the tv visually, and subtle communicated.
https://www.thesocialcontract.com/artman2/publish/tsc1004/article_903.shtml
BUT, it was the sixties, and Packard did not envision 62 inch HD screens, or that they would become windows into a world that is CREATED for CONSUMPTION by an ignorant citizenry with little grasp of history.
Nor could he have anticipated the ubiquitous tiny screen, or the social media phenomenon that consumes our people today.
JFK was the first to use the advertising technology to produce political ads.
Citizen United gave the plutocrats the money to go to the next step, but it was the ANARCHIC space—the iINTERNET— which PROVIDED THE PATHWAY for the kind of rhetoric presented in your post. This new technology opens up subversive, hidden channels, creating an ECHO CHAMBER OF LIES WE ALL KNOW THAT IF YOU REPEAT.something often and it becomes truth. Repeat it endlessly — and it becomes the NORM!
I hear that word often, too, these days.
I just finished reading Frank Bruni’s The Republican Strategy? Fear & Lies. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/23/opinion/republican-strategy-fear-lies.html?rref=collection%2Fbyline%2Ffrank-bruni&action=click&contentCollection=undefined®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection
I had copied some of his words in his essay when I read Diane’s post Bruni nails it!
It was the Nazi strategy, too, put out in their propaganda machine BUT it was 1933 and there wasONLY RADIO!
Here are Bruni’s opening paragraphs: If I listened only to Donald Trump and those Republican candidates who follow his example, I would be petrified. I would be living in a bunker. I would have cyanide capsules at hand.
I would be convinced that the scattered protesters disrupting some Republicans’ meals were the advance guard of a violent liberal mob about to wrest control of the country. I would worry that the Democratic Party was secretly trying to elect terrorists and traitors to the House and the Senate.”
“And that caravan of migrants — I would see that, too, as some nefarious Democratic plot, or as a Trojan horse with jihadists in its belly. Either way, I would recognize it as the end of the world: Armageddon in the hunched form of a pregnant Honduran woman limping toward the only hope that she has. He has insisted without proof that there are “unknown Middle Easterners” (his proxy for “terrorists”) in the caravan of migrants. He has insinuated that deep-pocketed Democrats paid the migrants — which makes zero sense, because images of them are more likely to help anti-immigration Republicans than their Democratic adversaries.”
Exactly , Frank.
Words like: adversaries, and enemies… is it any surprise that his words fall into the chaotic minds of those malignant failed human beings.
I said to my grandson, this week…next, they will come after the jews.
Today… there it was!
No surprise to me.
Thank you Susan. NEVER FORGET.
Thank goodness for the sanity of this space.
I like Ken Burns.

Great dialogue and great listening; we need more of both to quiet the little ill dulce trump and his followers.
The bottomless depths of numerology.
Thank you, Diane, for educating me. I watched “July 22nd” on Netflix recently and was shocked at how that man in Norway was so planned out and part of the alt-right. This kind of thought is sickening and worrisome. I was introduced this week to something our children are doing now called Five Nights at Freddys. Apparently it is a video game for kids that is scary and about murder as told to me by an eight year old. Marketing has now spread this game into things like backpacks, etc. It really saddens me that parents are allowing their children to play this game about murder. Will they grow up to want to murder themselves? Very, very , very sad…….
Netflix’ founder Reed Hastings is partnered in a charter school chain. He can be seen in a YouTube video calling for an end to democratically elected school boards.
I just checked Wikipedia and was surprised to see that it had rapidly updated references to the slaughter in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The list of people making use of Gab is all too familiar.
Odd bedfellows who support Republicans- Adelson and the Mercers who fund Breitbart and Steve Bannon.
More odd bedfellows who support Republicans- Dan Loeb/Paul Singer and Rex Sinquefield.
